This is definitely my pick for the summer.

The story is rather basic, aliens come from Mars to feed on earth, writen by H.G Wells in 1896 or somthing like that, it was the first sci fi alien type book.

The aliens come down in a green gas cloud like a missle into earth, and then contrust there "Fighting mashines" there, but it seems the movie just has them teleport with lightening..or..somthing.

The film doesnt look like it will follow the book at all, but that doesnt matter, it wouldnt make a good film (As more books dont), I like the design of the aliens crafts, look like a mix of the floating ones from the tv show (Cant say I loved them) and the ones in the musical (The tripod guys) I dunno which was the orginal..

To sum it up...

Aliens pwn our asses.

Edit: I <3 that mustang in the vid.

Yay. I love the way that, while its an epic films... its actually following the escape or one man and his kids rather than some hero saving the world.

exactly, it looks bloody awesome, the special effects actually look believable.

that little kid weirds me out though, shes just too good. :rolling:

I am so excited for this one. That trailer looked amazing. It should be nothing short of spectacular. I am definitely more excited about this movie than I was about Episode III.

To me it just looks like another action movie, nothing especially spectacular about it. I'll still see it though.

Interesting. Does anyone know the name of that music that is playing? It was also used in the LOTR trilolgy teaser many years ago.

That looks freaking awesome.

I wonder how it will end? In the origonal books / TV series (or it might have just been the TV series, I can't remember) they died from human bacteria. Hopefully that doesn't happen in the film, as it would... well... suck. But yet there only seems to be two possible endings; Aliens die in a really stupid way like in Signs, or Earth gets wiped out. I can't see how Spielberg could make a decent ending from the latter, but I can only say that I hope he does. I hate "epic" films that have crappy resolutions, like Independance day or Signs...

I'm sure they die of bacteria. I can see that in a movie, easily.

Just one thing:

In the trailer, he shakes someone, saying "I know you want to fight, but you don't have to. You don't."

I can't tell who that person is, I think it might be the kid that you see at the beginning, but it doesn't really matter...

In the origonal, don't the aliens take over human bodies or something? And seeing as there's no real reason for Cruise to be saying "you don't have to fight" to a human (They're all gonna die anyway; why not go out with style?), I'm wondering if an alien has taken over someone's body, and Cruise it trying to say "We can live together, why are you trying to kill us?"

Of course, I could be wrong, and it could just be that the kid wants to fight the aliens; and Cruise doesn't want him to, because it's suicide. But that would be boring. PAH!

*edit* The "kid's" name is Robbie, btw

its his son isnt it or is he minding that guy? the guy wearing the hoddie, he says it to him, i have a feeling from watching the trailers, particurly the new 1 that toms 'son' will die and tom himself, the girl will survive i think, just thinking out loud here though. :dozey:

Bah, every time I watch the trailer, my theory becomes more unlikely.

In the end, I think "Robbie" just wants to fight in the war, and Tom doesn't want him to die.

Nope, the original didn't have anything to do with aliens masquerading as people. And the bacteria ending was used in the original book, the show, the radio broadcast, and the movie.
However, the aliens are apparently not from Mars this time around, and the movies tagline is "They're already here..."
Make of that what you will.

One of the aliens' most remarkable characteristics is their ability to osmose into the human body-- actually meld their body into ours. We have footage that was taken by a news photographer. Aliens have never possessed animals or children. Because of this, we theorize they need a certain minimal mass to occupy. They can be anywhere and they can be anyone: soldiers, waitresses, bikers, the homeless, paramedics-- they can take over just about anyone.

taken from here.

I presume this was just in the films, as I know nothing of the books.

Just another generic, "Wow! That looks awesome! I'm gonna see it when it comes out."

Seems that was from one of the films, but not the most famous of them. (The americanized one with the floating ships.)

That wasnt in the books. In the books they where just alien things that crashed down to earth from mars, and then build the tripod like fighting mashines.

Im in no way going to go see this film with an outlook of seeing H.G Wells book in all its glory, it seems pretty much everythings been changed.

Ya i saw this a few days ago, i CANT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE. INSANE!

I'm not sure if that site can be trusted:

"The most significant of these is a story titled "The War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells which has been used as the basis for many other fictional invasion stories as well as a part of the U.S. government coverup of the 1938 invasion at Grover's Mill, New Jersey. However, Wells' story itself was a fictionalized version of an actual invasion."

I think the people on that site think the Aliens are real :O

WOW! I cant understand how I could have forgotten about this movie.

Time to give you people an update:

TV Spot 11 (with new footage and rock music)

TV Spot 8 (click on "TV SPOTS #1-8" - then TV Spot #8)

Also, get your first listen to songs on the soundtrack, right HERE.

at the very least the acting is better than most Sci-Fi (star wars included if you haven't guessed), even Dakota Fanning scares me

On the plus side, I like the new Martion Camera on TV spot 8-9, brings back memories of the 50's film

Sorry to go against the grain here, but I wouldn't see this movie if someone paid me to see it. IMO, it looks like complete and utter crap. Your typical hollywood rip off of something that worked in the past with the addition of overwhelming fake CG. The whole blockbuster movie mentality sickens me. Bigger budget, bigger explosions, bigger ego actors. Where has the creativity gone?

Someone needs a cookie. :D

Thats why we're excited: It's NOT the typical holiday ripoff, it looks to be a very original take on the idea, the production values are incredible, and the actors are a-list.

The trailer i saw at the Cinema in UK shows alien's kind off.
You see him ducked behind a wall with a window on the top half and an alien walks past, you only really see its shadow through the glass and they look about 7ft tall.

Anyway, i can't wait for this movie :D its going to be one of the best ever for sure and it starts showing the day after my holidays start :D

I know some things are being borrowed by the book. The Red Weed, the tripods and if the end is anything to go by, the Bacteria/Disease/Virus kills them off.
