Do you use WASD or the Arrow keys when playing?

Used Arrow keys pretty much my entire gaming life.

Recently tried venturing into WASD, mostly because it's a pain in the ass always changing my configuration settings around.

tried arrow keys the first time i played an fps, i mean you figure it would be the best place right?

WASD is so much easier

back in the days of yore, games like doom, dark forces, rise of the triad, and Wolfenstein 3D taught me that arrows were the only way. it wasn't until my friend let me borrow a little game called half-life that i was shown the error of my way. I didn't want to switch at first, but was forced too since this was one of the first fps games that i used a mouse (didn't play any of the quake games til after half-life). using the mouse and arrow keys is just too uncomfortable. i reluctantly switched to wasd. and my life has never been the same.

WASD. Used arrow keys for the first shooters i ever played like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.
So yeah pretty much what David.Seth2 said. This was like 9 years ago. Have never looked back.

Arrows. Left handed ftw.

wtf how am I the only one so far

WASD ftw

Arrow keys were used to play doom. When I first played Half-Life, I realised why we used WASD.

I'm left handed but learnt WASD because its infinitely better for using other nearby keys (ctrl, space, r, z, x, c etc...). In fact, I use the mouse with my right hand too, learning that way has meant I haven't had to ruin every other pc config when I sit down at! The added dexterity in my right hand now has made me almost ambidextrous.

I'm right handed and still use the arrow keys. I just never bothered trying to use WASD. My mouse has enough additional keys so i don't find using the arrow keys inconvenient.

It's not like we haven't had this discussion before.

Old school games? Arrows

Games that require more than simple movements? WASD

ASD, right mouse button for walking forward.

WASD, only use arrow keys for simple flash games.

Also arrow keys are stupid, why they couldn't be a D-pad?

I use ESDX, gives me those 4 extra keys on the left.

WASD here.

Used arrow keys when I first got into FPS' but quickly realised there are a lot more keys in immediate reach around WASD.

Might even consider using ESDF soon. :O

WASD all the way!
e = Use
q = Last weapon
shift = duck
ctrl = walk
v = talk on ventrilo
space = jump

Neither.

Caps Lock, A, Z, Left Alt.
pinky hangs in the breeze.

and usually:

tab - inv/stats
s - lean right (or sprint if no lean)
left shift - lean left
left cntrl - grenade
x - crouch
c - prone
space - jump
q - activate/use
w - sprint (or melee, depends on game)
d - ammo type
e - misc, depends on game

Mouse - fire, aim, reload, weapon select, flashlight, fire mode.

What kind of radioactive freak uses arrows?

I haven't used arrows for a decade now. I remember trying to switch to ESDF after Tribes 2 came with it by default, but as much as that made sense I was too set in my ways with WASD. Just as well really. I don't think any other game in the history of ever has tried to force ESDF on people.

Btw Brick, can you actually bind capslock to stuff in most games? I've never tried, I just assumed it would never work and few games seem to have it bound by default...

In 13 years only ever had 1 game I couldn't bind Caps Lock and that was so long ago I can't remember what it was. It is a most useful key and often overlooked. You do end up shouting when typing ingame messages sometimes though.

Back in Quake 2 days (first time I had a computer capable of running 3D games), I learned to use right click for foward, shift for backward, and z,x for strafe left and right. It allowed for a larger bank of functional keys above my hand. But as you might imagine, frantic deathmatch maneuvering was sometimes awkward and there was no alt-fire for Half-Life. I converted to WASD a year later.

There was this neat little thing that Battlefield 2142 did if you bound something to Caps Lock. If you pressed it, you'd see the caps lock light flash on and back off again. Externally, the game sent another caps press to your system to turn it back off. Nice little thing to keep you from yelling at people :)

Finally, I used arrows back in the days of Doom as well :)

You can bind capslock in any source game and most other games. You can also use it for ventrilo calling. I don't use it though.

Glenn, a long time ago I used mb1 = forward, mb2 = backward, z/x = strafe, alt = fire, shift = jump in quake 3. Not that I was good at it back then, but you can get used to pretty much anything.

I remember first using WSAD.

I was really young, I had a cry in frustrated fear.

ASD, right mouse button for walking forward.

I'm the same way, if I can't re-bind Right Click to move forward I pretty much can't play the game properly, not FPS games at least.
