Since I upgraded to Vista, I can no longer watch Quicktime HD movies, or the HL trailers from Steam. The sound is fine, but the picture pauses sometimes for seconds, stuttering all the way.

I have an Nvidia 6800GT.

Is this a software/hardware problem that anyone else is familier with? Oddly enough, I can watch streamed quicktime HD movies with VLC almost without issue. Not the Steam stuff though.

update ur driver. i have vista and i can watch HD videos.

Are you saying VLC won't work with the Steam videos because you don't know how to get them from the Steam interface to VLC or did you actually go into the steam media folder, locate the .wmv files, try to play them with VLC and it didn't work?
(just trying to clarify)

Well I use VLC to watch everything. Its not entirely compatible with Vista, but its far better than anything else I've found since it has all manner of nice little options that make for better viewing.

Yes, VLC won't play steam media. Nor will WMP. Nor will Steam. This wasn't a problem on XP, they all played perfectly. On Vista though, the computer just doesn't appear fast enough to play them, the sound is usually ok but the video lags massively, stuttering from frame to frame. The video is still in sync with the audio, its just that I get about 1 frame a second :(. Normal definition videos are fine.

I can only presume its a software issue. It goes without saying I have the latest drivers etc. I'm viewing in 1680x1050 on a 21 inch LCD, games play perfectly well.
