Water not rendering

Ok I checked the valve ERC to find out why I was getting bogus corrupt reflections in my water, and it said that when using the developer water materials (like pretty water and canals water) they should not be linked to any entities. So when I unlinked the ( I have 2 water brushes) they dont render any more.

Any tutorials or suggestions out there?

Can you post screenshots?

The water should show up as 'solid with 6 faces' when selected...try typing 'buildcubemaps' in the game console, sometimes my water only appears when i do that...

well screenshots wouldn't really help, because there is nothing to see, it does not render. And yes, I type buildcubemaps all the time and it doesn't make my water appear. I also have the water_lod entity close by which also doesn't help. My water was working fine when I only had 1 brush...but the second brush made it not work...or maybe not. I don't know :(

Cool thanks Boss

And My level just randomly went crazy on me, saying my spawn entity wasn't valid, so I played in spectate mode, and went under my water, and realised that my water is rendering, but underneath the top side of the brush instead of on top which is why I couldnt see it.

Ill try to fix it, guess Ill just apply the water to all faces or something.

But now I got these floating entities and random disappearing brushes which is going to be fun to fix. Hopefully Ill get some screenshots up soon as its about 75% done

yeah read that tut. at the bottom says why it renders from underneath and not on top. add an env_cubemap

or to quote the tut: "To stop this happening, we must select our entity tool and click anywhere within the map. When the entity is still selected, press alt+enter and a dialog box will appear. From the list choose "env_cubemap" and leave the settings on their default. Your map will look similar to that of below"

This is stupid I dont get whats going on, no matter what I do the water only works from underneath (looking up at the water from inside the water) but not looking at the water normally from above. From above, there is absolutely nothing there, just the brushes underneath.

I've got a cubemap and a lod control with the cubemap linked to the top of the water. I've tried everything boo.

just make sure your using the nodraw applied to all sides, then place your water texture on the top side. it should work. you can then buildcubemaps in console to see the reflectiveness.
