Get ready for the next gen Western Digital Rapor drive to hit the scene.
If you didnt know already, WD's Raptor drivers are the legendary 10,000RPM SATA hard drives that have toped the performance charts for the past few years. Though untill now we've been limited to 35.7 and 74gig sizes. Pretty small for such an incredibly fast drive.

Now we have comming down the pipes is the new Raptor X which sports a respectable 150GB, the super fast 10,000RPM speed, a 16MB buffer, and now a transparent window of the platters (which is the newest trend).

Though it seems their making a huge deal over the window, which is cool and all... but how offten do you look at the HDD?

Innnnnnnnsane!
But so is the pricetag... $350
:<

But oh baby... imagine 2-5 of these in RAID.
*droooooool*
Installing Windows.... done.
lol

They've finally realised the gaming market for these - which is definately a good thing. Built in windows seem real good too... I have one of the 74gb variants in my computer, slightly loud when busy but its cool when I get into CSS rooms before everyone else :D

Nice, but in my opinion it's not worth it to spend that kinda moolah on a harddrive (unless you're really loaded). I'll wait till the price is muuuuuch lower- my 2 normal WD drives are just fine for me.

My Samsung 200GB SATA is faster than anyone's HDD I know. I'm always the first in the server for BF2 and always the first in CSS.

very stupid imo... way overpriced for "leet gamer windows"

Fool it's no where near as bad as (unrelated tech news):

NVIDIA and Dell unveiled the first-ever Quad-SLI PC at the Consumer Electronics Show 2006. Taking its acclaimed SLI technology to the next level, NVIDIA introduced support for not one, not two, not three, but FOUR GPUs. Delivering the most extreme high definition gaming experience available on the PC, Quad SLI features four of NVIDIA's flagship GeForce® 7800 GTX GPUs with an NVIDIA nForce®4 SLI motherboard.

Imagine tearing through today’s most advanced PC games with an unheard of 41 gigapixels per second of raw graphics performance, 5.2 teraflops of compute power, 96 pixel pipes, and an astounding 2 GB of on-board graphics memory. Nothing can stop you when you have this kind of hardware on your side.

Now imagine yourself doing all of this at extreme HD resolutions with everything turned on. A Quad-SLI PC lets you run your favorite games at an unbelievably high resolution of 2560x1600 while maintaining silky smooth frame rates. In addition, support for a new 32x antialiasing mode and 16x anisotropic filtering enables stunning visuals.

If I get a new drive it will be one of these!

well, the window adds on $50 to the pricetag of the regular 150GB.

The HDD alone isn't the only reason you are first in those games...

This sounds cool. Too bad I just purchased a 300 gig HDD when I upgraded my compy. Oh well, Next time!

Actually, the newer Seagate drives with NCQ are easily just as fast, if not faster, than a Raptor.

I still love my first gen raptor :)

Always first or second in the rooms. Really fun to play one on one matches with the other guys with pwns hdd's, while everybody else boots up.

In what field?
There are over 5 different things you can bench a hard drive on.
Seek time, write speed, read speed, random access speed, etc, etc, etc

I'm not talking technical speed, i'm talking visual speed.

As in, NCQ will make your HDD perform allot better, on the side of things that you see, not improve seek time and ras.

Some sort of packet optimizing thingy :P

I used to have a 36Gig raptor in my pc, but i took it out, can't say i was that impressed. Problem with the 36Gig raptor is that it may still have fast access times, but since then a lot of drives like the latest hitachi deskstars, samsung spinpoints etc outclass it in terms of loading times.

I do quite like the look of the window in that new drive though, and being a decent size, it should have higher data density than the old drives, so could be pretty fast. Still a lot of money though !!
