In regards to the item unlocks, we were tied to the achievements in the past due to our backend technology. The update we released just prior to the Scout update, where we moved TF2 over to using our new item backend server, is the one we've been waiting for. With that shipped, we have much more control over item delivery, and we'll be re-evaluating the way we give out items. It's highly likely we'll be taking a different approach with the next pack.

I'm oddly excited to see what system they use next.

Cool, it'll still be a good few weeks before we hear anything about the next pack though, if anything at all :(

It'd be really nice for people like me who play shitloads of games besides TF2 to be able to use the unlocks without dedicating the huge amount of time necessary to get all of them.

Unlocked straight away please!

Seeing as Valve will have the numbers of all those who used the Achievement unlocker, maybe now they'll see that loads of people want the weapons from the start.

I highly doubt they're just going to give it to us, but it does sound like it will be far more flexible.

I love Valve. They punish people for using achievement unlockers, but they still respond to their dissatisfaction reasonably. They strike back against pirates, but they then take note and attempt to make Steam so convenient and awesome that people won't want to pirate. Long live the Emperor!!
