Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) web host? Preferably one with a monthly payment plan and no setup fees. So far all I've found are otherwise good hosts that have annoyingly large setup fees or require that you prepay for 1-2 years.

PHP and MySQL are required.

HostMonster is what I use. No setup fee, have a monthly plan i think, lots of storage and bandwith, and was ranked #1 on cnet.com when I signed up.

There's a setup fee unless you pay for 12-24 months at once.

have you tried dreamhost ? the last i checked they dont have any setup fees ...
edit : scratch that ... you have to pay for a year to waive the setup fee. sorry :(

Yeah, they were the first host I checked. I got my hosting from them a while back, but it seems they've added a setup fee some time since then.

Edit: Also, hosting space isn't all that important. A few hundred megabytes would be more than enough.

it seems that there arent any monthly plans that offer free setup , i think its because they cant recover costs if new applicants decide to ditch the account after the first month. its too much of a risk.
edit: if you're just playing around there are free hosts that give you MYSQL and PHP ...

Bump because I'm still looking.

To restate and expand on my hosting requirements: PHP, MySQL, at least a few hundred megabytes of space, and a monthly payment plan with no setup fee. And domain hosting, no ads, etc.

When I had my website I really enjoyed ixwebhosting
I doubt you can find a monthly payment plan with no setup fee.. Like said before it's just to risky for the company.

Get yourself an domain and I can host you for a small monthly price.

PM me.

I used HostGator for a year or so, until they ****ed me over.

Switched over to BigBlueHost - been with them for a little over a year, and I love it.

wow that actually looks pretty good , the only down side is that you have to pay for domain registration unless you get one their gold/platinum package.

I think I still have at least one domain name that hasn't expired. BigBlueHost looks pretty good.
