So I just put together this new computer:

Vista 64
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
eVGA 8800GTX 756mb
eVGA SLI something or another motherboard
4 gigs of ram
yadda yadda my system should be able to run it and then some

Problem is I can't even get past the main selection screen without the graphics completely bugging out. I mean the game is unplayable. I've upgraded direct x drivers, sound drivers, video drivers, and motherboard drivers. I've reinstalled hl2. The thing just refuses to work. I can get quake 4 and F.E.A.R. to run beautifully. But not HL2 or any of the mods I have for it. And I get no error messages or anything. I've searched google over and over and can't find any solution.

Ouch. Welcome to Vista 64bit. You are better off contacting Steam Support I think because I don't think many people run Vista 64.

I know this is a little bit of an old post but i have what i think is the identical problem

DxDiag results for people who know what this stuff means www.blood-knight.co.uk/HL2/DxDiag.txt

I have hunted in as many places as i can think of for a solution to this but with no result.

Ive seen that many people have this running on vista and vista 64 with no problems at all, which obviously makes this a difficult nut to crack so to speak.

If anybody has a list of things to try, or even better an actual solution to this problem that would be fantastic, since id rather not run a dual boot system if i can avoid it

Vista sucks.
How delightfully insightful, 'twould be nice if the MB had a rating systeme so that helpful comments could be rated accordingly

Your Village called....

It shows on the start screen and i'm just assuming that it means the executable takes advantage of some of the 64bit extensions.

Ive no idea if it shows in game as i havent got that far yet :p

This issue is holding be back from the orange box, which i want but wont buy until i resolve this issue, which i hope is forthcoming.

Dual booting is an option that i have considered, but its a horrible one, I jump from one task to another with frightening frequency, only rarely do I spend a hour or more on a single task, having to do a 5 minute boot cycle every time I do something different is counter productive in my opinion, at the end of the day I can live without HL2 and its spin-offs, id rather not, but i can.

Short attention Span.
