There are steam files in my store-bought installation of the HL Platnum pack,
which is REALLY funny and sort of strange because the same installation still supports the WON servers. Ugh. CONFUSION.

whaddaya mean?

My old non-steam installation of half-life (the one you can still buy in the store....)
Has a steam client dll in it!

or maybe client.dll just never changed...

That's not the point...the file i'm talking about is called "steam.dll"

I figured out what it is... it's that platform file that's updating every once in awhile that's like ver. 2.x.x.x

The only thing it does is it needs to be present along with the local steam service to run all of the "Steam-itized" (if you will) versions of Valve's games.

Speaking of that, it's become obvious that Valve has altered all of their game files to be dependent on the Steam service. This was kind of dissapointing with HL2.
I hate the usual answer to "how do i run hl2 without steam?" It's always: "oh, disconnect from the internet and offline mode blah blah blah blah."

If someone can find to away to extract the game files from the gcf cache (at least we've gotten that far) and find out how to run them as an indepentent game, they derserve a medal.

Oh yeah, does the boxed version of HL2 need to have steam running while you play it?

Yes it does, but you don't have to be online though.

Why is is that I don't need to be online to play HL2, yet for some strange reason my copy of HL and Op4 requires you to be on the internet?
