I've been chatting on the IRC channel hl2 on the network LCIRC and I've just chatted with someone that goes by the name Ultyma. He actually admitted to me that he was editing Source to make it work...and was implementing weapons from HL 1 into it. Here is the transcript:

<spitcodfry> are you working on the beta?
<Ultyma> not the beta
<Ultyma> the code
<spitcodfry> what do you mean by that? editing source?
<Ultyma> not really editing the source
<Ultyma> adding script files to make it work

*sigh*

"Ultyma" is 1 among the thousands of people out there editting the source to make it "work".

There really isn't anything stopping this is there?

yea you can't stop it its probably time to just accept it unfortunately

nope. nothing will be able to stop this. whats bad is when some chinese dev gets their hands on the engine and makes a decent ripoff game of it

I don't mind people trying to make it work for their own mod and stuff .. I just don't want to see any HL2 content and spoilers being released.

Nope. You can't just suddenly stop thousands of people... let alone find them all.

I don't think it can be stopped. But we can slow it down. Most people are now getting the source from filesharing programs so make fake HL2_source files and just fill them with garbage. Put them in your shared folder. If we make enough of them, people trying to download the source will hopefully download a couple of fakes and give up. Of course, the determined will get it somehow. But it could stop quite a few.

If you were talking about modding the engine, well no that can't be stopped. But it's not really bad either, so no big deal there.

Hopefully it'll encourage Valve to get the game out quickly. ;) hehehe....

Hahaha, anyone that wants to pirate a game can get a facefull of it in my opinion. This entire escapade makes me sick, and I hope I make people think twice before clicking to download this beta if it gets leaked.

i dunno i think making fakes would just be a waste of energy those who want it will get it eventually

Before you go jumping on you bashing high horse think, it is exactly these type people who are working with source that made all the mods for hl1 and contributed to it's popularity.

it isn't all bad that the source got leaked just mostly bad it lets some of our modders and potential modders get some insight on how things work. its just when its used for malicious things like hacks and pirating it becomes a real bad thing. but in all fairness for the average coder it is just fun to take a look at and see how they went about making such a stunning game.

I still think you're behind the leak. You used the Valve tour to put a trojan on their computers.

To clarify this whole situation.

We are not editing the source. We are adding in scripts. Like weapon scripts to make them work. This can be compared to menu script and console scripts released earlier today. A few people are coming close to getting things working.

As of 10:31, there is a working "deathmatch" that a few people are testing. You can't see the other player, but its still fun.

which is still illegal, congrats, man, youve got the FBI on your tail!

I do not have the source code so therefore it is not a legal issue for me.

I have it but don't know what to do with it so i put it up for grabs

an if you believe that i'm good lookin

You can see what hl2.exe needs when you run it if you add the -console switch. Then you just fill in the blanks. :)
