Here's an update:

The guy who was going to buy me the alcohol copped out on me, and for hours my Chinese friend was disappointed and depressed as a result. So I took another journey to the fourth floor and found another guy who'll help me (he doesn't live there). I had dinner with him a few days ago, he's pretty cool. I therefore earned lots of prestige with my friend, even more if this deal goes through.

Also, the guy previously going to help me was working security today for my dorm, and he was having trouble with a calculator chess program he was coding.
