What are the demons (?) in F.E.A.R? (possible spoiler)

I've done a bit of searching and couldn't find much on this other than similar questions without answers. These are the creepy guys that you first see in dream sequences that screech and come drifting towards you. Later in the game (once you've opened the Vault), they come out in 'real time', where you can see them up close in the light and even slow them down (which didn't work during your first encounters with them in the dream state). I swear I heard footsteps coming from them in at least the first dream, but upon closer inspection they appear to have their legs missing. Clues...

1) They're naked. Eww.
2) They all appear to be males (judging by their chests).
3) They are missing their legs and float to get around. Note that they don't "fly": they are restricted by corridors, staircases, etc.
4) They exist in dream sequences until you open the Vault - then they teleport (?) after you in the real world.
5) They can be destroyed by gunfire both in the dream sequences and real world.
6) They turn into a puff of gas (for damage) when they run into you.
7) They look like, what, burn victims?

What are these critters?

Now I'm about to cut out for sleep tonight, and this question initially came from my girlfriend. Just after I posted this question, she had this idea: they are the souls of failed clones. They had a bad batch and, being psychic entities, are still around, available for control by Alma.

I don't know about them being a bad batch per se, but the clone connection seems like a good one, as the demons all appear to be identical males. The clones do have a psychic ability, however latent or "client side" it may be, that may give them that kind of presence in the, what, nether region? 8th dimension? Dream world?

First off...your girlfriend is remotely interested in video games let alone interested enough to swap theories with you about FEAR? Where do you find these women? Not to mention it's a theory that makes a lot of sense that I wouldn't doubt is true.

I got the idea these were Alma's psychic attacks.... and the reason you can survive them is because you can see them, whereas everyone else just got mauled up without watching it coming.

I guess they can be let go at that - Alma's psychic attacks. I thought there might have been more to them.

I'm also lucky enough to have a girlfriend who I was discussing the same thing with. Theres a lot of unanswered questions in the game, which makes it all the more creepy. Without knowing exactly what the hell Alma was in the first place, its tough to speculate what those beings are. We were also discussing how the questions of the water contamination are never fully answered.
