I want to really make sure I've actually got the computer it takes to run HL2 and expansions.

so my specs are:

2.66 GHZ processor
2 GB Memory
Nvidia GeForce 7800

If you need more than that just ask and I'll give the details but I really want to know what you really need to get things to run smoothly and look good.

Thank you ahead of time for any constructive input given.

that will run half life 2 just fine...

... what kinda processor is it? A friend of mine has a 2.8Ghz processor and its a pentium 4 that runs like shit... I've got an old amd 2.1Ghz processor that runs like a 3.1Ghz proccessor. It all depends on the quality and im no guru on the stuff, If you post the name, im sure some one else here would be glad to let you know how well your p reticular processor is.

over all though, yes... that will run half life 2 on highest setting ( your frame rate might drop quite a bit when having HDR on which is only in half life 2 episode 1, some couter strike maps, and some day of defeat maps.

Two Intel Dual-core Xeon processors. They come in the standard with the Mac Pro. Would you mind me asking what HDR is?

One more thing, what is HDR?
High Dynamic Range lighting. It is not in HL2 but it is in EP1, CS:S and DOD:S and Lost Coast

You know how in real life when you look at a bright light it takes a few seconds for your eyes to just and it doesn't seem so bright? Thats what HDR is in games, go from a dark area to a light area it will be very bright for a few seconds. It is on every map in Episode One, and in certain maps in Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source.

the only thing i hate about hdr is even if your outside and then look in any direction then it will do the same blinding effect.

Wait!!!

I told you the wrong graphics card!!

I'm actually using a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT!

Will that dash my hopes of experiencing Half-Life 2?!

No. Try the demo first if you want to be really sure.

Indeed, download Steam free from www.steampowered.com, and download the Half-life 2 demo from Steam which will give you 2 maps (I believe) to experience the Half-life universe and see how well it runs. I'm unsure how well the HDR lighting will work for you, but once you've bought Half-life 2, Lost Coast is a free miniature expansion for you to test that out on.

I dont understand why Lost Cost isnt used as the "demo" with an "no HDR in Half life 2: notice" on it... it would work as a much better demo i think.

lost coast is a demo for the new features that they added to source a year ago. why would you rather have that then a hl2 demo?

Ok, I've got an idea as to how I could boost my graphic capabilities. Do you think I could link two Geforce 7300s together and it would raise the bar enough to get what I want, or is just one geforce 7300 enough to do what's needed? This would keep a lot more money in my pocket if I don't end up buying a totally new card.

just get a 7600gt if you can spare it. you cant get one fro around 120 usd now. the 7300gt will be fine but wont be amazingggg.
