What can DVD players read?

Is there a specific filetype I could convert the movies to so they are readable on standard DVD players on TVs? I don't care about menus and other features, I don't even care for chapters either. I just want to be able to play a CD (or DVD if absolutely necessary) on a TV set without a computer.

EDIT: Found out, its the VCD format of MPEG encoding for anyone else who might want to know...
