Before long I am goin to have to decide on which university degree im going to do to train to be a games designer. However Im not sure which to do, im not sure if there are any professionals here but any help from anyone would be appreicate. From what ive seen so far my choices are between doing a Game Design course that actualy concentrates on how games are deisigned, a game development course that includes programming art and design, or a combined course with something a bit more genrall, like Media Studies with Game Design. THanks for any help!

I think a BSc in Computer Science would be a better choice.

I know 3 people who work in the games industry. My brother, who works for Creative Assembly, and 2 friends, who both work for Lionhead. None did a games based degree, or think they're actually worth much (Not only is it putting all your eggs in one basket, it also sounds extremely ropey. A computer Science degree will leave you better equipped to pursue a career in the games industry, aswell as many others)

It's also extremely unlikely (impossible infact) that you'll walk straight into a games desingers job. You'll either have to start as a junior programmer/artist, or even a tester, first. (Media Studies with Game Design won't prepare you for this)

Get a good (computing/computer science) degree from the best universtiy you can - and then see what you want to do. (to be a designer you'll need a decent understanding of coding/software engineering and all manner subjects)

You can always do some 3d gfx/art type modules at the same time (which I did). When it comes to actual 'games design' - you'll learn that by actually working in the industry)

This is yout choise, not your.

I hope you meant to say: This is your choice, not ours.

Otherwise you are a really confesed...

And yes I think a CS degree would be better.

Computer Science would be good, but for that in England you need to get an A in maths at A level, which is very hard.

I was in a hurry, I meant to type: Otherwise you are a really confused person.

i know. but i thought it was humorous on a post correcting someone you need correcting....that's all.

That's not always the case.

Southhampton were fine with a B, others are ok with a C.

I didn't even take maths A-level and got into study Computer Science at a few universities.

Maths at A grade isn't exactly that taxing...

Anyhow apart from what everyone else is saying, I'd recommend getting invovled in a mod.
