what do i do with .map files?

NOTE: I HAVE LEGAL VERSION OF BOTH HL1 AND HL2, PLZ DON"T ASK...
ok, i've got hl1 and while downloading some costom sp maps, i realized some files are .map, i'm ok with .bsp file, i know what i have to do with them(well, DUH!) but i don't know where i should put the .map files.
plz help.

He used to have the warez version because he couldn't get the legal version at his location.

Could it be an uncompiled Hammer Editor file? It's been a while since I used Hammer, not sure what file extension it uses anymore...

.map files are the raw, uncompiled format for HL1 maps.
