I'm picking up an AGP 9600 XT with 256mb of memory for a cool $20. Would this card be good enough to handle Half Life 2 and the modding that will go along with it?

I'm on an 8500 AIW right now and it's sort of a pain to use the level editor with all the slowdown.

Yeah it will handle HL2. Might be a little slower with the newer HDR graphics and such on Ep1 and beyond but it works perfectly fine for regular HL2.

I have it and it runs HL2 at high detail AFx4 on 1024x768 without much problems. Adding HDR in episode one runs like crap (even when I OC it 15%).

My thoughts: Thank god I'm getting a new one soon.

It's ok.

But it crap for online games.

Seriously, 40 fps on low detail @ no bumpmaps, specmaps and you'll be pushed to the edge of insanity.

Thank God I got a new computer lol.

My 9600XT did me perfectly fine on all games I tried to play *except for Doom 3 on medium settings..*

I could hit all high settings on HL2 with 2 gig of ram. I guess I had a REALLY good version of the card, because people bitching about the horrible quality of it, I just never had that low...it was odd.

From what I read, the 256mb edition actually ran slower than the 128mb one...

You'd be better off with a 9800XT me thinks.

Yeah, but I'm getting this card for $20. A 9800XT will cost me a lot more.

Troof. Cheap = good in most cases.

And if it did indeed ran slower, it couldn't be much...that would just seem totally illogical. \=

I have it, but the 128mb version, lovely card that runs all my games on 1024 x 768, medium settings online and offline actually. Never any trouble, everything in detail i'm happy with and a good card. Not for people who want a 'tres beau' game but for $20, jump for it.

well, if its only 20 bucks, its definitely better than an ati 8500, thats for sure

If you're at all interested, I'll sell you my old 9800 PRO dirt cheap.
