What if there's somebody else out there? (must see!)

Mountain View, California (CNN) -- At this moment we have reached a major turning point for both science and the public at large. The SETI Institute is now offering the world the first taste of raw SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) data collected by the Allen Telescope Array in California. With this we move closer to fulfilling the institute's mission, which is to search for our beginnings and our place among the stars

Throughout the institute's 25-year history (we are a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific research, education and public outreach), we have analyzed these raw data with custom algorithms operating on semi-custom hardware. Now we are transitioning to readily available hardware and servers because technology has caught up to us -- hooray!

In the future, we hope that a global army of open-source code developers, students and other experts in digital signal processing, as well as citizen scientists willing to lend their intelligence to our exploration, will have access to the same technology and join our quest.

Shit just blows my mind I love dwelling on this kinda stuff.

I mean think about it if we ever do recieve signals from far away from another Alien Race they could already be extinct by the time the signal gets to us.....

extinct or already plotting to take over the world?

Let's say they send a signal (bloop bleep blop) at light speed. They're somewhere in the galaxy 10,000 light years away. In the 10,000 years it takes for the signal to get to us, they could have already developed a way to create a faster-than-light mode of transportation and have visited us.

I figure it's as much a shot in the dark to listen for alien life as it is to see it. I mean the world is going to stop broadcasting analog signals not far down the road and digital signals don't travel forever through space. I assume that, if alien life progressed similarly, it leaves us around a hundred year gap or so within which to pick up any unintentional signals.

So unless somone's out there essentially with sirens blazing for no good reason other than someone happening upon them... I don't know how much it will find. No reason to ignore the possibility though...

Space - the ultimate frontier. It's unfortunate that we won't be seeing aliens anytime soon. :(

We do this. Thus it's no far stretch to imagine other intelligent forms doing the same.

Man, imagine if an alien race visited us and wanted to be allies. That would be awesome. Aliens come to our planet and we can go to theirs.

You know, it kinda worries me that we haven't been contacted yet. Think about it. There must be billions (if not trillions and trillions) of planets out in the universe. It would be reasonable to assume that at least a few million of those have intelligent life. And assuming they do have intelligent life, they are probably millions of years more advanced than us. So why haven't we had any contact? If there was a human-like life form out there that was millions of years more advanced than us, what is preventing them from coming to earth? Do they not have faster than light forms of transportation? Are they just too far away? Do they know about us but just don't care? Or is life really that sparse in the universe that we may never find another sentient being?

Maybe their tech level is the same as us. They're probably wondering the same thing right now.

They see shit like this and never want to visit-

That is thought provoking. It reminds of that book, by that guy.

What if we finally build the spaceships to venture the galaxy and find planet after planet that once had sentient beings and civilisations but they're all dead. Decaying cities one after the other.

We've already met interdimensional beings, and ones in our own dimension.

How else could we have reverse engineered the UFO? Gotta' get to the crash sites before their backup does.

Heh. That reminds me of all those jokes over here about how the CIA tortures aliens and uses the information gathered to maintain America's global military dominance.

Here is also a photo of Nixon shaking hands infront of a prototype dubbed Black Sun Mark II:

Theyve probably seen Earth as the chick you walk upto that looks hot from behind at a bar, then she turns around as you're walking toward her, you see her face and run for it.

Baywatch body, Crimewatch face. Earth looks great from a distance but seriously ***ked up when you get close enough to notice.

I have 0 doubt in my mind that there is life out there in numerous forms. Its just logically impossible to suggest otherwise. We are only here because of the distance from the sun and the conditions that have developed over millions of years on the planet's surface.

If Earth was created at the same time as every other planet, who's to say logistically theres no chance there isnt another 'Earth' out there for example.

However, no matter what we think, the mind simply CAN NOT comprehend the physics and statistics involved.

I mean, hell, we cant even come to an agreed decision on the creation of life for non-specific-deity's sake.

Hey! I watched that video for 2 entire minutes before I clicked on that spoiler.

Why you little...

That's interesting, haven't heard that here. What kind of jokes?

But it's possibly true.

We'll never know I guess.

Here come the Area 51 speculations!

Let's say there is a highly advanced alien civilization in close proximity to us (let's for the sake of argument use the movie contact as a reference). Now, assuming they are still in existence we can logically speculate that they have been able to overcome most of the problems facing any species including but not limited to war and other aspects of self destruction. Also, it's incredibly unlikely that this civilization is anywhere near our level of understanding regarding the universe, mathematics, etc...so basically they are to us as we are to a chinchilla in terms of intelligence.

Would it be wise for them to even consider contacting us knowing how much the world is screwed up (assuming they can observe our planet in some way or another). What I'm trying to suggest is that for any type of advanced life out there, to contact us knowing full well the ramifications it would lead to would be....stupid.

My theory is that until we are able to make it to at least a type 1 or II civilization there is little reason for advanced alien life to take the time and say hello. I think it was sagan (I could be wrong) who describes driving past an ant hill on a dirt road and wondering whether or not we should try and discuss our technology and see what we could learn from them.....basically, a pointless endeavor.

Anyway, based on the premise that other life has been able to withstand the test of time...i see no reason for them to let us know they are out there until we can at least live in peace with ourselves.

The sad thing is that even if there are/were alien races out there, we will never know about them. The universe is about 13.75 billion years old, yeah? That's not very old. 90% of that time has been spent on ejected matter just settling into large objects like planets and suns. That means that if there are alien lifeforms, they probably began around the same time life on Earth began. They could have started earlier by a few million years or so, hell maybe even a billion or two - just for sake of argument. But, that doesn't change much. Even if the very first civilization to send out a signal wasn't human, and say it was millions or even a few billion years ago, the chances of it reaching us before we are extinct is like 10 galaxies in 100 billion.

This is a waste of time. Unless there's time travel/teleportation. Actually, no nevermind, it's a waste of time. However, I think someone should be doing this in the 1E-22% chance that we do receive a signal. Then we'll probably be the only sentient beings to know there are other lifeforms out there.
