You can find this in steam/steam steamui_english

"Steam_SubscribeIntro1" "You're about to subscribe to:"
"Steam_SubscribeIntro2" "This will cost $9.95 per month.

Since it is your first time subscribing to a game,
we need to ask you for some additional information."
"Steam_SubscribeIntroProductName" "Valve Premier Pack"

Is this the thing about just subscribing and getting all games valve offers plus newones as they come out, or is this what we may or wont pay to play valve games if its this fee plus cost of games?

its the monthly OPTION. its always been regarded as an option by valve. i dont know where people get the idea that its going to be the only way to play valves games.

If you pay the monthly fee, you get all valve games and the new games that come out, on Steam. It is probably just a default message.

Steam will not have a required monthly fee.

It's an option, not a requirement.

10 bucks a month? is valve planning on releasing a game worth 50 bucks every 5 months from now on or something? seems like a ripoff to me.

haven't you ever heard of an MMORPG?

Not if you subscribe for just one month or something...

It doesn't make any sense bringing that up... obviously, this isn't and MMOG...

It's a hell of alot cheaper than paying $5 a day to play CS:S and HL2 at a cafe...

Obviously not. I was referring to how there are online games that have monthly fees and there are millions of people that play them, so it's not unheard of.

BESIDES: It's an option, not a requirement

Its also a hell of a lot more expensive than buying the game if you play for 5 months. Or 3 or 4 months if you get it on sale.

Besides, its CS. everyone plays it a little.

don't be alarmed by a subscription fee.

if you buy hl2 normal version via steam/retail, you get hl2+ whatever mp is in hl2 and you can play that mp whenever, forever, just like any normal fps.

(i believe this info is from the official valve info thread...but it was like a year ago so i don't remember, and i couldn't find the post) valve said quite a while back, however, that they were thinking about a subscription option on top of buying hl2 (or other games) that would give the customer a continuous subscription to anything and everything regarding that game. i'm not sure if it's anything and everything valve releases, but i wouldn't be surprised.

regarding whether or not this subscription fee is worth it, i recall valve (probably gabe) saying something to the effect of: >i believe we've gotten quite good at "generating content" over the years.<

basically, they're saying it'd be worth it. and i for one would believe them...they're not gonna have a $10/month subscription fee unless they generate content that makes that fee worth it...otherwise people wouldn't buy it.

Think of it like renting a video. You don't rent a video for 3 years, you watch it then take it back. Likewise, you'd play CS:S or Half-Life 2 for a bit, then stop the subscription.

i dont see any point in subscribing. after the subscription period you are left with nothing. if you buy it, you can spend the same amount, or a tiny bit more, then have those things forever.

it all depends on how much you play, and how many games you will play. $9 a month isn't a lot if you have a decent job, but of course it may be for those that struggle to scrape together enough $ for a game.

when valve starts releasing lots of content i bet its going to be more worth it for the subscription. if TF2 costs $30 and you buy hl2 collectors edition for $80, thats $100 right there, or you could play them both for $10 a month. in that 10 month period you can be sure there is going to be more valve content for sale.

i don't think you can get hl2 via the subscription...but maybe i'm totally wrong--if you can, i would imagine they'd make you to commit to X months first (you can't just pay $10 to play hl2 all you want for a month..i don't think they'd do that). the guy above who said to think about it in terms of renting a movie is totally wrong..from what i understand. but...it's been a long while since i last discussed about this and read the valve comments....so who knows.

for now, why not treat this like the status of the game, or like the collectors edition information, or like the legal disputes:

SHUT UP, WAIT, AND SEE. it sucks.....deal with it.

Remember its one subscription for ALL games. So thats HL + mods, HL2 + mods, TF2, CS:S, DOD:S etc...

heres a scenerio for u.

u are a gamer who happens to play a variety of different games (and perhaps own alot of games as well) and while HL2 may seem interesting on some level, ur not fully sold on whether this game is worth ur money.

so what can u do without forking out $30-40 for the full game? use the subscription service, play it (and other content that comes along with it) for a month or whatever amount of time subscription gives u and then take that time to decide whether this game is worth ur cash.

believe me, there are pple out there who are not HL2 fans and who are only mildly interested in the SP and mainly just want to see how good the MP is.

like i said before... this subscription service is probably not for pple who spend time learning about HL2's gold announcement/release date.. (yes that means pple such as u and i :p )

Wait wait, how do I get to this? I wouldn't mind subscribing.

well right now u can't "get to this" because its not available yet.
it should be available eventually in time for HL2's release tho.

if u are wondering about details, well we are all waiting for details on everything pretty much still :)
