Hello All

It makes me sick people calling this guy, who stole the HL2 source, a 'hacker'.

The media and everyone else always places the name 'hacker' on people who get into secure networks and causes damage. Like what this guy did. This guy is not a hacker. He is just a crazy stupid idiot. There are just no words to describe this scum.

Now you may ask what makes a true hacker? The Elite of the Elite hackers? Who are they? What do they do?

Well these 'true' hackers get into extreme secure networks. They don't touch anything. Doing it is enough satisfaction for them. They get the biggest buzz there is. But I tell you what these true hackers do then? They tell the system admin when they did it. how they did it and even help them fix the security hole. These hackers are the only ones that deserve the right to be called a 'hacker'.

All the virus makers etc etc and this guy who got into Valve, they all think they are sooooooooo leet or some crap. They brag they blah blah crap to there friends. God they are just pethetic.. pffft.

So this is a message to the guy who got into Valve. Your not special. Your not even a hacker. You may think you are but your not. You caused damage to Valve, a company that makes computer games for our enjoyment. You stole there source code that they worked on for 5 years to complete and now people can download it in 5 mins.

Remember now when the possible of more delayed hl2 millions of people. Yes millions not thousands or hundreds but millions and millions of people hate you.
 
I love the post man. It's long and has some good information, thoughts, but the question is kind of dum. Anybody can be a hacker. Known a little C++ or VB and you can hack. Hacking is relatively easy with all the vats of information on the internet. There are many types of hackers. Script Kiddies, Big Boys, professional, Crime, CIA. There are many, the type we are now seeing are known as Script Kiddies. They are basically people who are somewhat new to code and try to make viruses, trojans by messing with source codes and trojans that have already been made.
 
I don't know - this guy or group had to have some skillz to be able to get into the Valve intranet, to be able to put keyloggers on ALL of the Valve PCs via e-mail...

I'm not trying to "dignify" them by calling them hacker(s), but you can't exactly dial into their network without some decent knowledge...

It's scary what people can do over the internet...

And how the heck did they download that 160 MB file without anyone noticing? Wouldn't some sort of alert in IT go off? Do they have an IT department at Valve? Wouldn't their server log any outside IP addresses d-loading from their own HDDs?
 
I don't know Silent, the attack on Valve sems pretty well thought out. Script kiddies are the type of hacker who just want to destroy things.

Good thinking qckbeam. I think you may be right. Possibly a funded hacker trying to ruin Halflife2's selling points? If they were kids, they were dum, but had a good organized plan.

Hacker = Someone who can hack together a small program for a purpose.

Cracker = Someone who forces their way onto a system.

And for all those guys who think they are some 1337 hacker cause they can get onto a password protected pr0n site, roflmao... a kid with ten minutes cracking knowledge can do that.

edit: just thought i'd define hacker/cracker as some people seem to have a problem defining the two.
 
It all depends on the type of method he had used to get into the network. whether the system had logged is IP it depends if the guy
was running a Proxy to spoof his IP which i can guarranty he would of had if he was smart enough and if he hadnt then im sure he would of been cought by now, reading the email from gabe it says that he may of got though using a Exploit in Outlook Express and there is not that many of these progz you can just download off hack sites to do this kinda job so this guy obviously had some knowledge to take it that step further to expoit there system.

im sure many of you would of praised the guy if he had managed to rip the whole game if at the time it had gone gold...but what the hell.
we dont know whether its just coverup from Valve to delay the game futher


Valve should offer a reward to white hat hackers to test there security
if there planning on having 24/7 connectivity to the NET.
 
I don't know hax, I respect Valve quite a bit and wouldn't do this. I want to own teh game with the box art and everything. I want that day to be perfect. I support Valve and will buy their products. I hope the community would as well.

There are various different sites/companies offering awards...

Unfortunatly it would take a super computer about 15 years to crack it. They wouldn't offer that money if they thought someone could do it :)

A hacker is a programmer who specialises in making small programs to do a specific task. Always has been, always will be. Whether they use these programs to access servers etc is another matter.
The company i work for (Eurocom) has always recognised this, and i think an internationally known company has more say in this than someone who was banned from these forums last month.

For more information why don't you take a quick look for some real hackers/crackers on the forums out there. They'll be sure to give you the correct definition.

Ok, lemme set this straight then.

hacker = person who excels in all sorts of fields in the computer area.
most likely he knows several programming languages, protocols, and just general "computer stuff", most likely leaned toward security, but not necessarily.

cracker = person who makes viruses, who removes game security protections, and sometimes one who breaks into other computers.

script kiddie = one without any kind of knowledge, who downloads .c exploits, nuke.exe :p, and basically just downloads ready made tools to get into systems.

now its important to recognize that what makes a true hacker, is not what he does, but what he knows.
there are many insanely skilled blackhat hackers out there who breaks into systems, and causes all sorts of havoc, but that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't skilled.
so yeah, make of it what you will, but this is the way it is.

Yea that's the definition. Or was sometime in 1992. As it stands, "hacker" ALSO means "intruder". Not to mention "cheater" in Counter-Strike, uh oh, did you think of that?

Why oh why is it so hard for some people to comprehend that some words have several meanings? "Hacker" has also meant something malicious for a long time now. Get with the program.

The entity who carried out this security breach is certainly a hacker. Not a cracker, since he didn't break any encryption or copyprotect code. Not a script kiddie, since he obviously had at least a modicum of skill. This illegal intrusion was committed by a hacker, or a group of hackers. End fact.

The guy who started this thread even discerns between hackers and, uh, "true" hackers... sigh. Also, he writes:
