I have AMD Athlon 1.5ghz
512mb ram
64mb nvidia geforce 2
windows xp

I really want half life 2 to look the dogs bollox while running smooth. What can you guys reccomend me on doing? I dont really have a clue when it comes to PC's ;(

Up the processors speed to about 2.0 Ghz - 2.4 Ghz
Get about 256 Mb more RAM.
Get the Radeon 9800 Pro 128 and you should be good.

your RAM's probably good enough, what type is it?

for a processor, look into a 2500+ on up

Uhh, no? Upgrade proc. to the highest your mobo supports, or just get a new mobo and CPU. 512 ram= absolutely fine. If your budget permits the 9800 pro, get it. If not, get a 9500 pro if you can find one. If you cant find one, go with a 9600 pro.

How much do you wanna spend? Your ram is fine but you definetly need a new video card. You can find Geforce4 TI4200's for around $100 bucks on newegg.com now. Your cpu should be ok but I would also say that 2ghz will be what you need for optimal performance.

or an AMD 2400+

i wouldn't get a 4200... it's probably wiser to spend a few extra bucks and get a directx 9 card, though stay away from those damned 5200s!

i swear, people see FX, think it's the baddes mofo around, then complain when they can't run HL2 on high everything with IQ cranked

Your video card is your bottleneck there, then your processor.

Doobz, all assume that you're talking about thr 5200.

If you are runing a 1.5 i would have to say new cpu and video card and maybe a bit more ram.

CPU : Athlon 2400+
Ram : 256 pc2100
VGA : 9500 pro OR 9700 OR 9800

This should get you the best preformance possible. If you get the 9500 pro it will cost about $300. If you get the 9700 it will cost about $340, and the 9800 will be about $375. All of those numbers are off the top of my head, so don't trust them completely.

Ok, my prices were off. Add about $30 to each of them.

More like: $200 for 9500 pro(If you can find, www.newegg.com has them still) $260 for 9800 non-pro, which replaced the 9700 PRO, and about $360 for a 9800 pro.

cheers for the help guys!!

All I want is the graphics card that shows all or most of the little brilliant details in hl2 running at a playable pace!!

I have about £350 tops to spend so im a bit stuck! how much would an upgrade from 1.5 to 2 be?? cheers

For 350 euro you can buy a 9800 pro. With the CPU, you would probly either want to upgrade completely, with a new mobo and a semi decent CPU. Your mobo might not allow a 2ghz CPU, plus its just a rediculous upgrade to only buy a 2ghz CPU. And if you got teh 9800, without other new things, your CPU would bottleneck your performance.

There still on the market, but they dont make them anymore, the 9800np is basically a 9700 pro. Same thing they did with the 9500(Sorta). You can still find 9500s, but ATi does not make anymore of them, they make 9600s instead.

you should get a 2500 with a nf7s m/b and a radeon 9800 n/p all that for about 360 quid.
