Like many of you I was experiencing reboots when loading HL2. After several hours of screwing around, I finally had a reboot-free experience (2 hours + gameplay so far).
This switch in the launch option dialog worked:
-width 800 -height 600 -dxlevel 90 -heapsize 256000
I also had to adjust my video options (in HL2), using medium for most options. This removed the stutter that I was experiencing (my other problem).
FYI I had no luck until I used the -heapsize 256000 setting. That was the real critical setting. I set it to 1/2 my actual RAM.
