I'm talking software, mainly in the realm of video/audio, operating system, 'essentials' (I count Photoshop CS as an essential, I doubt all of you would as well), etc.

I'm running Itunes and Media Player Classic for audio/video, I've got Flash MX install (I don't know why, I suck at it), Abode Imageready/Photoshop/Premiere, WinRAR, ZoneAlarm...

Actually, the real reason I'm posting this is to find the most effecient combination of software that won't severely screw around with memory usage, start all sorts of shit at stattup, etc, etc. I'm going to reformat again, so I'm looking for the stuffs that won't totally screw my PC over this time around.

A little help guys?

WMP11 for audio/video
Sony Acid for audio editing
Photoshop for image editing
NOD32 for antivirus
MSN and Xfire for chatting
Azureus for bittorrent
Firefox for interwebs

That's pretty much it.

Winamp for my music
VLC for videos
MS Paint and GIMP for image editing/converting/etc, Animation Shop 3 for GIF stuff
MSN, AIM for chat
IE6 for interwebs
Azureus for torrents
Avast for antivirus (it sucks)
Daemon Tools for virtual drives
Sony Vegas for video editing
Winzip/WinRAR/Winace for compressed files

Thats most of it

Everything there is free except mediasource, record now, paint shop, windowblinds, icon packager, and ulead photo explosion, and of course XP

Advanced Windows Care (download.com) can block stuff from start up, and regcleaner can eliminate it if thats your preference.

My bare bones list:

OS:
Windows XP Pro SP2, w/ East Asian languages pack

Media:
Media Player Classic + CCCP, w/ Real + Quicktime alternative (plays everything)
VLC Player (plays the rest)
Winamp 5.35 for mp3's only ('classic' settings)

AV + firewall:
NO AV, LoL
hijackthis
Windows SP2 firewall
process monitors and rootkit software from sysinternals
a whole host of AV progs ready to install should the need arise
lots of awareness (comp is clean as a whistle btw, except maybe for rootkits...currently investigating)

word processing:
Open Office 2.0

Utilities:
Everest Home Edition from Lavalys (get from oldversion.com)
WinRAR
7-zip
Unlocker (unlocks files which are perpetually in use)
Netmeter (to monitor bandwidth usage)
enditall (to quickly kill/close unwanted processes)

Misc:
Windows Live Messenger (dislike) and Google Talk for IM

+ the setup file for every program I've ever used in a handy little folder (many 100's, something for every situation)

I currently have 35 processes running in Task Manager, which I consider to be a lot, but this is down to software for MSN, Last.fm and for my webcam. I consider all of these nonessential and can kill them off easily should I need to.

edit: btw practically nothing is set to startup with Windows.

An AV installed after you get infected might not be effective against a good virus. I've heard they can block key parts of the install and you might not even know it. "Oh nothing found? ok."
But you probably would manually remove them anyway.

Media
- Windows Media Player 11
- DIVX
- Winamp
- BitComet .61

Design
- Adobe Photoshop CS2
- Adobe inDesign CS2
- Adobe Illustrator CS2
- Flash MX Studio w/ Dreamweaver
- Microsoft Front Page 2002 (dont laugh)
- Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional

Programming & FTP
- Crimson Editor
- SmartFTP
- Filezilla Client & Server
- OpenOffice 2.1 (beats microsoft hands down)

I got a lot more shit than that, just can't think of anything else as I am not on my home computer.

Yes, I like to manually remove stuff anyway but point taken. The AV software I keep in reserve tends to be a last resort, for if I'm really at a loss. NOD32 or Kaspersky is what I'd go for if I switched to a having an AV prog running full time.
- OpenOffice 2.1 (beats microsoft hands down)
Oh, 2.1 is out eh? Maybe I should update.
