What the G - Man REALLY is

He is well, NOTHING! - look HL2 doesn't really exist, right?. Therefor neither does the G man. The makers of the game probably just put him in there to make people guess like this and querell in topic after topic. The makers dont even know them selves. They just though oh well, lets stick a mysterious figure in there to keep our story mysterious. What makes a character in a game? - what the develepors make him right? - so we know Gordon is a scientist of some sort. We have a background on him and his history for the game. But not on the G - man. I highly doubt one exists. - Anyway, thats my theory he is nothing. Its like when people agrue about starwars stuff, like where does Yoda go when he fades away. He goes nowhere because the story writer never thinks or says where he goes.

HL2 really does exist because i'm holding it right now! I'm gonna believe that the world of half-life is real and i rly am gordon freeman and that i do have a chance with alyx till the day i die. I sort of agree. I don’t think the gman ever had a purpose in Half Life other than to make you think there was something else going on. Maybe a plan to start the cascade or a plan to stop the Xen invasion by helping and keeping an eye on Gordon.

But that’s the key word - think .

The Half Life games are all about letting you think what you want to think. The gaps are left for you to fill in.

Hence the gman is who you want him to be.

You see, looking at one of the poll threads on this very same subject we see:

Now if Valve goes with the most popular choice "other alien", then what? They make 45% happy. That’s still over half unhappy with their decision. Even then "other alien" is still vague, they risk losing more popularity by picking the wrong sort of alien.

Another part of the game that splits opinion is the end of Half Life 2. Whether the city is destroyed, Alyx is dead/alive, Breen is dead/alive. They face the exact same dilemma, if they pick one over the other, they risk pissing people off.

The key to Valves story telling strategy is making the player decide. Why does anyone think any of the outcomes are true? Is there any evidence? No. So why are they so sure? Because it’s what they want to believe. It’s how they would prefer the story to end.

If you feel a story is better if "the good guys" live and the "bad guys" die, then Alyx lives and Breen dies. If you feel stories are better with important characters being sacrificed for "the cause" then she dies. The same can be said about all aspects of the Half Life 2 story.

Valve shows you enough to make it ambiguous then you fill in the gaps.

It means everyone comes away from the game playing their ideal story out, regardless of how different their idea is to yours and mine. I think its genius.

Don’t get me wrong, I like to speculate as much as everyone here. I think it helps people develop their ideas, shows people choices in the story they might not have thought about. And it can be fun trying to piece together evidence of certain aspects of the story to try and rule out theories and narrow down the selection.

Also, everything above relies on Half Life 3 retaining very little about Half Life 2, in the same way not much detail was mentioned about Half Life in Half Life 2. So I could be totally wrong and Valve has planed to reveal the whole truth in Half Life 3.

I think it will be a little bit of both: Alyx will not be mentioned and her fate will be in your mind but Breen will be confirmed dead by the end of Half Life 3. But of course that’s just speculation.

My thoughts on the G man ----- The G man grew up in a large family who didnt care about him and he lived in the ghetto so he started to deal drugs one day he found a drug that would effect you your whole life and would make you think you are doing incredible things that are not real....he didnt want to test it himself so when this wierd guy from hollywood with a seedy goatee ( Gordon ) came along it was the PERFECT oppurtunity...Gordon took the drug and something went horribly wrong, the only real thing he ever remembered was the G man... Thats why the Image and voice of G man is always stuck in Gordons mind and the rest of the crap that goes on is just Gordons F-ed up imagination after taking that mysterious drug...a few days later the G man got capped after he gave the mexican mafia some bad crack....yep thats MY gman theory
