I'm on dial-up.

Now, I can play CS:S at a decent 300-400 ping; not understandable for you cable/DSL-ers but I've learn to deal with it. Anyway. Whenever I close CS:S (prolly because I came up with a whitty spray), my internet goes crazy... it's on... spending all my 56bkps. I noticed this when I would close it ans then go back in and the server search would take 2 minutes. Somehow the server list tries to match your ping so all I got was servers that had 1500 ping so I'm goin' crazy. So I think... and shut off Steam (which I think is a TOTAL pain-in-the-butt) and the connection settles down. I start Steam up again and the connection fires up again.

Can someone explain to me what his happening... or what I can do to fix it.

Thanks.

If I had a 56 k I would tell you but steam does constantly take bandwidth it seems...

Well, now it's when I have Steam running. Just now I opened Steam, just that and my connection went crazy.

This is crap.

Go to steam, right click on all your games and set automatic updates to "Do not automatically Update this game"

that should help

Well Q_onfused, sorry to be a bit rude.. But Valve said that steam wasn't made for 56k.

That wasn't rude... :stare:

But I never heard that before...

And I did shut off the automatic updates and that did the trick... thanks a lot.

its not that they said Steam is for broadband, they said it was better for it

I played the original CS beta's for years on 56k, and even though it was damn tough against people on ISDN and eventually BB, I managed with the help of some decent drivers and tweaks to get my pings down to a very respectable 130-150.
The only problem is the bandwidth, on 56k its none existant, on a server with 8-9 players, you won't get much lag, more thanthat and the lag will be terrible for you and everyone else.

Its your duty as a responsible member of the CS community to only play on servers where you won't lag anyone else, lagging people to f*ck is'nt the best way to make friends.
Just play on your local servers and you'll be fine!
Also enable the console, to do this if you have'nt already, goto keyboard settings when in CS then advanced, and enable the console, if this does not work then create a new text file and put into it

con_enable "1"
bind "X" "toggleconsole"

(X being the key you wanna use to toggle the console)

then save it as autoexec.CFG
and put it in your cfg folder usually .. C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\you@home\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg

Then once in a game, open the console and type "rate" then change it to 2500, press enter.

This will make sure that the server your connected to, does'nt flood your pc with too many packets of data, that it can't handle, otherwise this is what lags you and others.
The packets of data if too great, will then come through wrong and your pc will spend time error checking them from the server.

If you wanna try new drivers, then goto www.driversguide.com
register free, and search for your modem, the newest drivers won't necessarely be the fastest, I was using 1998 drivers upto when I got ISDN 2 years ago.

well..

I have dialup too.
yes im still using is because broadband isnt in my area. anyway
i get a ping of 130-160 mostly around the 140-150 area.

how i got this?
Probebly because i keep my computer virus/spyware/adware free
and that i optimize my connection.
also you will need a pretty decend Dialup modem. if you are using one which came with your computer when your bourt it, DUMP IT they put the shittiest ones in not for online gaming just for downloads.

go buy a nice exspensive (£20-£30) modem if you can get a
Zoom PCI v92 they are good (thats the one im using)

software to download:

Spybot search and destroy
ad-aware se
spyware sweeper (30day trial but it will get rid of all your spyware in about a day)
TuneUp Utilities 2004 (30 day trial but optimize your connection using it to see if it makes a differnce)

you can probebly download these software from:
www.majorgeeks.com
www.download.com

or Google.com is your friend ;)

a few more software to prevent spyware/adware
Mozilla firefox - Best web browser in the world

spyware blaster - this will block most common adds and fake website before they try loading the websites. it updates it self aswell its free.

Zonealarm - Very good firewall you can get a free one from thier website its very good!!!

If your gonna get another modem, make sure it using hardware enumerating and not software, The old Rockwell 56k PCI modems rocked, but their probably re-labeled as Conexant now since rockwell changed hands.
A hardware modem is better than software since software modems require extra work from the CPU to encode the signals (best way I can put it, without baffling you with the science bit).
Thus that would eat into your framerate.
Also since online framerate in games is directly linked to your Internet connection bandwidth, It would be a good idea to run CS on low settings, to get as much fps as possible.
If you don't believe me, then run Create a CS server for LAN offline and then join a server online and see the difference in your fps.
If you only have 56k then the difference will be huge.
Oh! and a second hand rockwell modem will be about £5-£10 or so.

what's 56k....? Think I read about it in my historybooks once. Can't remember though. So far back in time...

i heard they had to wind them up to get them started

How do u get 300-400 ping with a connection of 56k?
I connect at 28.8k, and i a nice server i get 200-250
What i do is mess with cl_rate, cl_updaterate, cl_upspeed, cl_cmdrate, all that stuff.
And when you really want to see how much you lag (like when u go around and corner see any enemy and hide, but u lag back and die), put cl_predict to 0. Its really crazy.

Oh and if any one on dial up wants to play my Aim is NonStopableForce
and Xfire is NonStopableForce too, but when i play in CSS i am Dial Up Dan : )

-NonStopableForce

I dunno, I just do. It just is 300-400. I remember a couple days ago my ping was around 150 and I was excited. Lamer. Anyway.

I have a cheapo modem ($10) but they're setting up broadband wires around my area so I'm thinkin' it's gonna be avialable in a couple weeks/a month... (gotta call Charter). And as soon as that is up, I'm callin' 'em, no doubt about that.
