I just reinstalled HL2, so I'm trying to remember the tweaks that most people do. All I thought of was -heapsize 512000 for the launch properties.

Not mutch, puting up Combine health and tinkering with squad mainly.

i have cl_ragdollcollide_1 and for css i've got a whole ton that people gave me to compensate for the hitbox problem.

Nothing, except using God mode to mess things up...

a lot of those are dumb and i doubt hardly anyone uses them. i mainly just wanted the main couple that really help a lot and dont lower the game's visuals

Follow through the guide. It provides a lot of neat and handy tweaks for Half-Life 2.
This guy has great twaek guides on his site, for many games too...
And you should check out his AWESOME windows xp tweak guide, it's a 166 page adobe pdf that covers everything you can tweak in windows XP.

Maybe ppl could tell what their tweaks actually do? Except maybe computer5k, your list is quite long... I have no tweaks atm.

well mine are:
cl_forcepreload 1 -reduces the chance of stutter due to loading files beforehand or sumit
sv_forcepreload 1 -basically the same but for sound i think
cl_ragdoll_collide 1 -ragdolls pile on top,havent really noticed it tbh
sv_footsteps 1 -louder footsteps
violence_ablood 1 -more violent :|
violence_agibs 1 -ditto?gibs etc
violence_hblood 1 -ditto?
violence_hgibs 1 -ditto?
cl_show_bloodspray 1 -better bloodspray *shrugs*
cl_show_splashes 1 -blood splashes on objects better *shrugs*
sv_robust_explosions 1 -better explosions
dsp_enhance_stereo 1 -better sound
sv_autosave 0-no autosave

Do you have to enter these manually in the console every time, or can you put them into the command line of the .exe file?

no i have them in a cfg file,you can put them in the command line but if you put loads in it'll get messy

The most popular command line commands I've seen (and use) are:

" -novid -heapsize 512000 +map_background none".

This eliminates the Valve video at intro (speeds start up), allocates however much RAM you want (better overall performance and reduces studder) half your RAM is reccomended (so if you have 512 megs of RAM yours would look like; -heapsize 256000) and eliminates the animated background in the main menu (also speeding start up).

Anything else you can change or add to your "cfg" file in your "cfg" folder (C:\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\yourname\half-life 2\hl2\cfg).

How do you put that command in? its not working in my .cfg file :|

For the "-heapize #", "-novid", and "+map_background none", you need to enter them in the Launch Options of the game you want to put them in.

-> Click on Steam icon in your system tray
-> Play Games
-> Right-click on Half-Life 2
-> Properties
-> Launch Options
-> Enter in any valid command in that field
-> OK

For most other commands, you need to put them in a newly created .cfg folder called: "autoexec.cfg".

By doing this, it automatically executes all commands in that folder everytime you start Half-Life 2.

C:\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\yourname\half-life 2\hl2\cfg

-> Right-click anywhere
-> New
-> Text Document
-> Title it: "autoexec.cfg"
-> Yes

Now you are able to enter any valid commands in that folder. Such as:

cl_forcepreload 1
sv_forcepreload 1
cl_ragdoll_collide 1
cl_smooth 0
mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0
r_dynamic 1

Not so much a tweak, but the Bloom mod gives you a decent effect.
