i realize a lot of people use linux or other random OS's for various reasons, but if you're here, you're using a version of windows because you plan on playing hl2...so which is it?

i purposely didn't list server since they probably aren't compatible with hl2...and it's uncommon enough that i don't care if you whine about it not being in the poll.

XP pro dual booted with redhat

XP pro sh*ts on home, but i can't help wonder why micro$oft couldn't just release the one version.

I can just see the development team:

Pleb1: "Hey I just developed some new cool tools for networking"
Pleb2: "Awww damn, I just finished some too, and yours looks so much better than mine..."
Bill: "Not to worry guys, I have a cunning plan...."

xp home was made so it could be a budget version...if $199 is budget :\

i'm running XP Pro with Service Pack 1, surprise surprise it hasn't crashed on me in MONTHS. seriously. combined with VPU recover from ATi there's no reason for my comp to crash out. even when a program will freeze up i can CTRL-ALT-DEL and get rid of the offended task.

and for the record i pray no-one is using the piece of crap that was Windows ME. seriously who bought that rubbish? anyone duped by MS? come on own up.

what do you guys think of longhorn? personally i think it sounds a bit too invasive but has potential.

i've used linux before but it doesn't meet my gaming needs. as soon as more games are supported on linux i'd probably move over permanently.

Windows 98 :p

Its quite crappy but you dont get to many viruses any more :p

I own WindowsXP Pro but I've owned and used 95b,98,98se,nt4,2k,xp pro.

Win95 -
First edition of a new type of OS. Decent but buggy.

Win98 -
Ignoring 95b and 95c, the second edition of the 95 OS, still buggy but much better, new OS features and support.

Win98SE -
Stablish version of 98. Actually quiite a good OS in its day. Still one of the most commonly used MS OS's to date in fact.

WinNT - Made for business's and don't we all know it. Probably the most sparse OS you'll ever use. Nice and stable though.

WinME - Although this is Microsoft's most unstable and flawed OS to date it's actually the best platform for pc offline and multiplayer gaming.

Win2k - Another business OS but a mix between 98/ME and NT4. Technically known as NT5 this OS isn't as sparse - interface wise, is currently the best "stable" platform for pc offline and multiplayer gaming ( out of Win2K and WinXP ) and stability wise, is better than XP. However, you don't have your interface toys on this :)

WinXP Home - Interesting OS. Budget version so they say, good for the older generation wanting to get into computers who would like the "ease" of WindowsXP but don't care about the rest of it.

WinXP Pro - The everything in one OS. Microsoft's latest offering and one that thousands of people flocked too after hearing about what you can do, what it can do, stability, tools, etc, etc, etc. At this point in time, the #1 MS OS.

Windows Longhorn - Currently in production, no doubt the name will change like when Whistler became XP. Should be interesting.

You forgot blackcomb.

Blackcomb - Upcoming Longhorn server counterpart.

Never heard of Blackcomb either. Anyways, I have Windows XP Pro.

Is WinXP really that different? I thought it was just an expanded Home, with extra tools, networking stuff, etc etc. But with the same codebase, and therefore the same stability.

WinXP is probably the best OS ive used. It vary rarely crashes. And it looks good anyway :p

Using Win ME =(
Though I'm probarly going to upgrade soon =)
As long as I manage to get hold of some cash...*grumble* *grumble*

XP Pro, such a step up from the abysmal Windows ME.

XP Home... it was cheaper, and as long as I stay ignorant of how Pro is any better, I'll be happy.

Right now I got home, because it came with the PC.

I allways had Pro before, but I can't actually tell the difference between them. Or at least no differences big enough to be worth the purchase (or other:p).

Maybe because I do very little networking...

Wheres 2003 ? :), ive been usin it since it came out, not many people use it though

XP Pro!

I still say out of the box, most Windows operating systems suck.. but, after a little tweaking you can get them working perfectly

Atleast, that's my experience with 98 and XP

It's compatible Gabe has said so and quite alot of people on this forum use it. Nobody has voted win95 yet you put it on there but win2003 would have atleast 2 or 3 votes by now.

agreed :)

and oddly enough my transition was from 98 to XP as well.. hmm.. u copying me?

XP home. Oh how I loved my dear 98se, why, why!!!

2000 ME Professional Edition, built on NT technology

Never crashed once, I can close any program I want using the effective Task Manager. Arguably the best version of Windows, ever :D

I use xp pro but wouldnt mind a look at win2k3...

WinME is the most disgusting, putrid piece of crap to have ever tainted my computer =\

I use win2k now like a good boy.

As someone else said gabe said it would run on 2003.

heck, I e-mailed him sayin will it run on 2k3, he said

"yes"

:D yay

Maybe windows ME shouldn't be on the poll...

As it's unlikely to run HL2 :)

A tad more likely to run it than Windows95, as long as it stays stable long enough ;)

Win98SE. I've been using it for 4-5 years now, aside from the occasional frustrating crash/driver fault/changing an option without knowing/deleting all your goddamn shared files accidentally, it works fine for me :)
