We know that Gordon Freeman was a scientist at Black Mesa which was a facility working on many varied projects including teleportation and the research of other worlds/dimensions. Most of the employs did not know exactly what they were working on and they only knew specific segments of what was going on. Testing on an especially pure piece of material from Xen was supposed to occur due to prodding from the "administrator". Gordon was involved in an "accident" which either was totally coincidental sabotage of some sort, or simply a cover-up for something else. Following the accident it became possible for alien creatures to transport from Xen to Earth.(This may be because of nihilanth or that is just a lie from the G-Man)After the accident Gordon was able to fend for himself against the creatures being transported to earth, as well as numerous military personnel; he also sees the G-Man walking around. He eventually ended up at the Lambda Complex which was the area of Black Mesa doing the work with teleportation between dimensions. He is told that there is a great mind holding the portals open allowing the creatures to get to earth. He is then able to go to Xen where many of the creatures are not hostile to him. He eventually kills nihilanth. After this the G-Man says that his Employers are impressed and makes him choose between death and working for him.
This tells us a few things:
The G-Man was running Black Mesa for his employers benefit but he did not want to let the public know about it at any cost.
The US government/Military was under the control of the G-man or his superiors as they were able to call in as many forces to clean it up as they needed, including forces to kill the original forces.
The G-Man can travel through space and dimensions at his convenience without the equipment at black mesa.
The organization the G-Man works for was interested in controlling Xen which it considered a “border world”. He also said they only held it for the time being. This implies that Xen is the border between two more important entities.
The G-Man’s organization is either human or has no trouble letting humans work for them.
Obviously I missed some things, please add your additions, corrections, and deductions about the story. PS. Laidlaw did say that Gearbox was given documents detailing the story of HL meaning that major plot developments should fit the world of HL.
