Seriously though, that money should be going to student's tuitions. The program to give college tuitions to World War II veterans turned out to be very successful and in the long run all that money was returned to the government and then some. America should be investing in Americans, not Iraqis.

I'm... almost speechless. Especially since I live in Boston, and can appreciate the scale of that "central artery" project the article mentions.

The resources we've poured into a heavy-handed method of controlling oil fields could have almost assured our energy independence. Instead we've thrown our money into a burning building, trying to put it out. And in the meantime, another generation of citizens grows up under a shortage of teachers, an outdated system, and poor equipment.

I have had this sneaking suspicion about those figures for a very long time, thanks for confirming them. I wonder if america would need such an expensive military (post-cold war that is) if they are responsible for giving the world a decent quality of living.

But I guess making sure everyone in the world has access to fresh water, food and does not have to live in poverty and generally being kind to the world is way to socialist for the government of the USA.
