I like to think of it as 'psych rock/industry', because ind nuts will complain if I call it plain industrial (and I like me some industrial, FLA are teh ownage). But what would you really classify it as?

Alternative?

Yeah I know the term is vague and has been used for lots of different things, but it's the only term that seems to fit as far as I'm concerned.

Industrial? How the hell "Pretty Hate Machine" can be considered industrial is beyond me. Broken and Downward Spiral, sure. The Fragile, hardly.

FLA is mostly good (until they got too much into techno), but I find that Wumpscut is more consistently good.

Pretty Hate Machine is Skinny Puppy mixed with popular music at the time, so it can still be called Industrial.

I always say Pop-Progressive-Industrial when describing NIN.

Now it's time for THE CIRCLE OF PAIN! Two men enter, half a man leaves! NOW LET'S GET IT ON!

Heheh, only joshin'

Seriously, I think only 'alternative' can really be used to describe it. Broken certainly isn't industrial.

It is partly. Last and Happiness In Slavery are pure Industrial-Metal.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

I think of them as industrial rock.

and FLA kicks ass too!

Noise, sh*t, cr*p, rubbish, almost-as-bad-as-drum-n-bass, the list goes on....

/\ Im suprised you find it "noise" Nine Inch Nails are one of the most melodic things I have ever listend too.

Some of the songs are melodic, and good... such as La Mer,The great below. But then he also makes such tripe; StarF*ckers Inc, No You Dont, and all them Pig ones. Maybe its just the type of music i dislike but the graaaah noise all the way through it annoys me. The songs (most of them) would be fine as normal songs, it doesnt need the growling behind it and the experimental stuff that just doesnt sound right, it takes away from the songs.

Piggy was fantastic =D
Star****ers isn't a song I'm fond of to be honest, I mean, I like it, just not much.
Pretty much everything on Pretty Hate Machine is awesome though, and The Fragile is fantastic to just slip into...
