I know it's a long way till Ep 3 but what comes after it?
I beileve Doug Lombardi confirmed somewhere that there is more half-life on the way, but does that necessarily mean more Gordon Freeman?
If Ep 3 is Gordon's last outing won't that make it a truly epic game (not that it already is)?

No I can see one more story arc occuring as many great titles are trilogies, Im guessing it will be in the form a full Half-Life 3, and then maybe episodes after that finally seal it off. After that, who knows, probably other stories built around the Half-Life universe.

I think I remember reading a PC Gamer where Gabe or Doug stated that they would like to make a tactical squad based shooter set in the Half-Life universe.

I am guessing... Lots and Lots of Half-Life universe spinoffs.

Half-Life: The true opposing force game

They could build a multiplayer only game, centering around the 7 hours

i thought it was gonna be ep3, and then half life 3.

Wasn't there suppose to be an Episode 4 made by a third party, using a different character not Gordon.

It has been confirmed several times. I'm not in the mood to go looking for the interviews through.

I've heard it too. Don't go accusing because you missed out.

i'd like to see a third party game about what's happening in the other cities when the city 17 citadel is destroyed and the combine are stranded.

NOOO Gordon FTW! If they kill Gordon in the last episode I will burn my computer.

Would be nice to see a 3thPG which would you play as Barney during the 7hour war and the events before that. How the combine invade the earth.

A flashback episode taking place in the 7 hour war would be the coolest thing since Billy Dee Williams. Want. WANT I SAY!!

the credits

but seriously though I can't really see the direction the developers are going because we have been playing as Gordon for so long now and the plot have been progressed extensively... So as others have been suggesting, we might be playing as another character in the Half life Universe.. Though it will be interesting to see the results regardless of how they proceed with it... :)

hopefully they will make a proper half life 3 with a brand new story for gordon :D. perhaps on another planet? i mean he is contracted with the g-man

i think maybe make Half Life 2 from Alyx's point of view, since thats the only game your not with her all the time.

The only issue with that, is Alyx has a deep personality and playing as her wouldn't be right. she wouldn't be able to speak, jump to places she could before and can't imagine you are her like you do with Gordon.

Yeah, doing something with the 7 hour war would actually be pretty interesting. Or they could do something with Shephard, I wanna see something done with him.

More adventures, not called half life but based in the half life world im guessing

The World According to Gabe
Valve's Gabe Newell reveals the future of Half-Life and tells us why episodic gaming is going to rule.

Be honest now: how many single-player games have played all the way through? Gabe Newell, the founder and managing director for Valve, is better that it's fewer than it should be. And he has a solution: episodic gaming.
"I think it's going to be interesting to see how gamers respond," says Newell about Episode 1, the first in a planned series of serialized playable "episodes" that will continue the Half-Life storyline. Each stand-alone episode will be shorter than a full sized game, taking roughly four to six hours to complete and will be available at the relatively low price of $19.99.
Newell confirms to PC Gamer that Episodes 1 through 4 are currently slated. And while we couldn?t pin him down to a release schedule, he says the plan is to be "pretty frequent" when unveiling new episodes - ideally six to eight months between releases.
Considering that it took five years to make Half-Life 2, how will Valve make this happen? By divvying up the work.
Inside Valve, two teams will be responsible for finishing Episode 1-3, a triumvirate that Newell says will wrap up Half-Life 2s current story arc. Episodes 1 and 2 began development simultaneously by separate teams; when Episode 1 goes live, its team will shift gears to Episode 3. Episode 4 will have a stand-alone plot and is being developed outside of Valve.
Newell believes that episodic gaming will kick off a renaissance in PC gaming, allowing developers to create condensed, fun experiences that its customers will actually finish and do so without the comparatively large financial risk of making a ful-sized game that may tank your company if it fails.
"In a way, fans are your venture capitalists," says Newell. Instead of relying on a publisher to bankroll a single big-budget epic, episodic games may allow developers to remain independent by using the profits from one chapter to make the next.
So, will there be a Half-Life 3? Newell says it depends on how well Episode 1 and its follow-ups sell. Preferring to continue the story of Half-Life episodically, he foresees using the format to branch out into other genres and take chances that Valve otherwise wouldn?t take. (High on his wishlist? A third-person tactical game set in the Half-Life universe.)
What's more, developers can receive immediate feedback from fans that can influence the next installment - a dynamic that Newell finds essential. "What's it all about?" he ponders. "Getting developers closer to gamers."

I went so far as to e-mail Gabe about the validity of this comment on November 5th, 2006. This is what he had to say.

Me: Awhile back, PC Gamer attributed you as saying that there was going to be an Episode 4 for HL2 in an article titled "The World According to Gabe." This episode was said to have a stand-alone plot (Not part of the 1-3 trilogy of episodes) and would be made outside of Valve. Is this still the case, or was the quote just incorrect or mistaken in the first place?

Thanks for reading this.

Gabe: It's correct.

This was almost two years ago though, so who knows if it's still accurate.

Maybe the Episode 4 became Portal?

The article states that the episodic content model allows for a smaller release to fund the development of the next one, and episode 3 hasn't been released yet.

Portal is really a separate game and storyline to the Half Life series, and I see Portal as Valve dipping their toe into new areas. I believe they have confirmed that there will be a Portal 2, so perhaps this will be shipped as a separate game to future HL2 episodes.

Anyway, this is pure speculation and conjecture.

Maybe the Episode 4 became Portal?

But Portal was developed by Valve. Where as Episode 4 is supposed to be done by someone outside of Valve. My guess is that Turtle-Rock would have done it, but seeing as they are now part of Valve i don't know.

That article was two years ago, so it cant be certain anymore.

'ideally six to eight months between releases' - well the certainly got that wrong, as did most of us lol.

Reading that quote brought me joy, but then I saw the date and seeing that I was put down lol

There's been no word of EP4 in ages.
Well you wouldn't really expect anything if it truly is 'Episode Four', since we heard little about Ep2 pre-Ep1 release, or Ep3 pre-Ep2 or even post-Ep2 release. Perhaps that puts paid to it being a 'fourth episode' rather than 'episode four', though considering that it's supposedly outsourced, and has been so for years, couldn't that mean that Episode Three's sequel may be in fact further along than Episode Three?

I still prefer it to be an unrelated, POV-expansion 'fourth episode' though. Though I really have my doubts that it exists anymore.

After whatever the Episodes throw at us, Half-Life 3 will be a 'monolithic' project like Half-Life 2. I don't believe that Valve buy into the hype they whipped up around Episodic at the beginning of the project anymore.

An epic Half Life 3 would be great. No episodes cause it does kinda detract from the greatness of the game. Like wrapping everything up answering all of the questions, reintroducing characters (Chell, Adrian Shepard) with no new random characters and stuff. Especially no spin-offs. Get those over and done with now

edit: I think a good strategy would have been to work on that as a side thing while making the episode so we dont wait 16 years for HL3

Well yea I do hope their is more I like the ideas here but my ONLY opinion is I hope they don't trash Gordon.

Considering the introduction of Chell in Portal, another silent protagonist, and the revealing of Borealis being an Aperture Science project, I could easily see Chell taking the place of Gordon. It would be odd, but better than effectively throwing away all of the character development throughout Half-Life 2, by pulling Gordon away from the world again.

After Episode 3?

Episode 4, or season 2, episode 1.

Alternate reply:
Meaningless existence, depression, etc.
The realisation that there's more to life might come after that though.

Whatever happened to I.A. Latham, she kinda mysteriously disappeared of the face of the Earth, her Combat Suit looked like pure sechs

I'm hoping she appears on the Borealis, and maybe a spinoff with her will come to fruition

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, she was going to be the Female Protaganist (from what I could guess, we would also play from her POV too)

She is in Raisin' the Bar

Wasn't Latham the name of Alyx's custom HEV suit that was cut? No?

What's after Episode 3?

The Clone Wars.

Or in this case, the 7 hour war.
See; milking the cow.
