Whats better?

im gonna get a new computer, and i was wonder which processor is better the AMD® Athlon-64 3800+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology or the Intel® Pentium-D Processor 830 [3.0GHz, Dual-Core, 2x1MB Cache, 800MHz FSB, 64-Bit]? It seems like the Pentium is much better to me, but im not familiar with AMD at all, and i was wondering why AMD's are so damn exspensive

Depends what you are going to be doing. If you're doing a lot of video editing and encoding then intel. If you are gaming go AMD. Even an AMD-64 3500+ is a good CPU. Why not get the dualcore AMD CPU? I'd like to get the 4800+

because a dual core amd is like 2-3 hundred bucks more exspensive than a pentium 4 dual core, i could get the pentium 4 dual core 3.0 GHz for the same price as a 3500.

There are your benchmarks. I would go for the 3800 if you are doing gaming or single application work. If you are multitasking go for the PentiumD. AMD CPUs are cheaper then intel ones. AMD is the current leader in ever category except mobile (the Pentium M is great). Just look at the benchmarks the AMD dual core CPU's win every time.

There is really no reason at all to go Dual core if all you do is gaming. Get the 3500+

Yeah...someday. It's just that Dual Core is so new and games arn't coded to take advantage of it properly.

The leaked 80.40 nvidia drivers are multi-threaded. And i'm sure that a 3500 would be better than an intel dual core.

If you are a gamer and do not multitask then go with a Single Core CPU. You can get a higher speed CPU for less money and AMD wins hands down for gaming FYI.

Now talking Dual Core's, if you want the performance and can afford the price range then go with AMD. Even if you did encoding then I'd recommend AMD's dual core over Intel's DC or HT CPUs.

The reason Intel's prices on their Dual Core products is lower is because the performance is lower. Intel had to lower the clock speed with 2 cores in one otherwise it ran too hot.

well im upgrading for gaming, but i want to be able to play games for a long time without upgrading. That is why i was asking about dual core, because i figured everything was going to change to dual core soon, including games

Yeh thats true, but who knows when games developers are going to start to make games that will utilise the 2nd core. Its a tough choice really.

Never buy for the future unless you know when it's going to happen. Most of the time that's 1-3 months down the road max. By the time most games use Dual Core they might recommend a 4-5GHz machine...
