There's little chance for it to be Steam, seeing as to how all these new content servers will give clients double the bandwidth. And how long would it take to sort out the game source code to hide the leak? And haven't there been e-mails asking VALVe if the leak is the cause of the delay? Didn't Gabe Newell reply "no"? Okay then, direct answer, anyone?

I don't think you'll find one. The only people who know are holed up in an office in Seattle, hopefully working their butts off. Anything someone posts here is going off speculation, taking into account what we've seen and heard. Could it be steam? Could it be the leak? Could it be the publisher? Yes. It could be all of them, but we'll probably never know the entire truth. That's just the way it goes.

As for the content servers, I'm sure that has a lot to do with CS:CZ's release this month. A week or so if I remember correctly. They'll need those servers in the long run anyway, but I imagine they're being brought online now for CS:CZ.

Could be attributed to a number of reasons, including a recode to negate the effects of the leak, or Steam is still not a viable delevery system (considering HL 2 will be a pilot test of sorts to test the deleivery system and show it off to other game devs as a means for them to distribute thier games)

My unsupported option is that there is a finacial factor, whereby the moneybags are delaying for a optimal financial reason. My reasoning is that the tech componet of the game is basically complete and possible to distrobute via 'ye olde' system.

I wouldn't be suprised if an accountant worked out the books and decided that the revenue from a HL 2 release would be needed in the next fiscal year (Roughly around April is it not ? ) more than this year.

Maybe the game isn't finished yet?

Or maybe they scrapped it ( unlikely but remember tf2! D: )

Pure machiavellan evil. That's whats causing it.

Internal reports from Valve shows memos containing notes about Gabe being dressed in a devil suit and waving maracas singing "I am evil Newell!" over and over again.

Another report is written in some strange language. Lombardi is walking around saying "Lissenen ar' maska'lalaith tenna' lye omentuva" to everyone and have big speeches in the odd language. When reporters ask what he is doing at the moment, he says he is busy working on HalfLife2 at all times, and doesnt even have time for a life let alone learning something new. RPG fans have been quick to point out it sounds awfully similar to elvish, to which Lombardi replied; "Lilie n'vanima ar' lle atara lanneina".

The last official thing that slipped past security was that from the coders.
A todo list for monday, which follows:
- Find out who put the sticky stuff on Yahns screen
- Coffee break
- Convince Gabe to take off devil suite
- Coffee break
- Fix a bug with the physics (see separate notes)
- Coffee break
- Buy milk
- Coffee break
- Listen to Lombardi having a great speech about fish, water and glowing suns or something
- Dinner
- Nap
- Coffee break
- Fix jiggly breasts (upon request by Gabe)
- Coffe break
- End of day summary (remember to buy more coffee)

In other words: THERE IS NO DELAY!!! Everyone is working hard and dedicated to bring you Half Life 2 as fast as possible.

lmao!

I've been thinking for the past few weeks that they delayed it from a desire to release it worldwide at the same time, and the fact that they still had localisation to work on...

Am I out of date?

It's because of six little asian dudes with leaves covering their junk.

how do u know its not Steam? just because they get content servers doesn't mean the bugs magically disappear..

up until last nite Steam was working fine for me.. but then Steam updated and after that, CS, OP4 and reg HL give me funky colors at the top of my monitor.. i play around with the video settings, problem goes away.. but the very next time i try to play a game, the problem returns..

u may or may not experience problems with Steam, but that doesn't mean everyone is problem/bug free..

Steam is still buggy.. and i don't pretend to know if HL2 is finished or not and that is enough for me to know why theres still a delay..

heres the thing, steam might suck but it looks like it can handle the release of hl2, i belive its to sugar coat the game, the first one didnt hit the deadline either but it rocked.

Hopefully we'll learn something after the "Stress test" of steam (CS:CZ release). If it is successfull HL2 might not be too far down the road, but if it doesnt go to plan, they might re-think their release plan or just wait till Steam is able to support it :S IMO ;)

i think hl2 is just not finished at all. they can't just release the game unperfect too many people are waiting not to be dissapointed (i know everybody is already because of the delay)

3 reasons:

-Steam (it looks like Steam will finally be ready to deliever a game by the end of next week)
-Leak (valve needs to rewrite parts of the netcode and fix other possible security exploits)
-The game isn't just ready yet! (You can't sell a game which is missing textures, animation, AI, sounds or music all over the place. Remember that the last 10% of developing a game takes about 90% of the complete developing time!)

1 & 2 are ok points, but frankly point 3 is pretty ill informed. If the game was as far off completed as the 'beta' indicated, Valve would of given a bit more notice than 7 days as to a delay, the 'beta' pre dates the E3 videos with regard to content.

the only way Valve can redeem themselves is to make some big release before Christmas. then i will buy the game. other then that consider interest completely lost. and i might buy it when it cost 15.99.

Agreed. Clearly, the leaked 'beta' is not the latest version, judging by what was shown at e3.

....please. You'll buy HL2 no later than one week after it hits the shelves. You know it is going to be a good game, and after reading what everyone is saying about, "This game rocks, I love Valve, Gabe is my Lover, HL2 rox0rs my box0rs!", you'll be frothing until you get to experience it first-hand.

Good day.

Answer: Other--game simply wasn't done.

Though goodness knows how Valve blew that one. Supposedly, they held off announcing it until they were sure they could complete it on a given date (originally September 30, 2003). However, a last minute delay of six months indicates that they were having major problems putting things together which says to me that they had no business announcing a firm release date when they did.

At first, I was under the impression that the last six months before the original release date were being used mainly for play testing and polishing, but Valve apparently waited until April of this year to actually start working on the content! I mean, crimeny, Valve, didn't you learn a damn thing last time?

At this point, I would not be at surprised if Valve pulled another, well, another Valve and overhauled the game from scratch pushing the release date back until late next year. Needless to say, these delays and Valve's information blackout has probably encouraged a lot of modmakers to turn their attention elsewhere.

Scope creep! Who knows, maybe the Athon64's temptations where just too much?
