What's going to be Valve's next latest and greatest?

Now that Portal, Team Fortress 2 and HL:2 - Episode 2 have finally come out, what is Valve working on now for their next game?

Portal is one of the most unique and fun game I've played in a long time, it's absolutely astounding. It is terribly unfortunate it's so short, I was expecting it to be much longer seeing how sweet the whole game is. Is it possible that they have plans for Portal 2 or are they focusing on a new title?

They're working with some other company on Left 4 Dead... might be cool.

Well the Portal team has stated a few times before its release that they would see what people wanted before starting something, more singleplayer puzzles, portal combat, multiplayer (they have ideas apparently so this would be my bet).

Episode Three we know is in the works.

I'd be surprised if they weren't at least playing around with some ideas for Counter-Strike 2.

But I'm hoping they have some new IPs in the works (or hire more creative teams, like the did for the Portal team), if you look at Valve's list of games the only other franchise they can add to is Day of Defeat.

Gabe once said in an interview something about new game concepts they were working on. Something about what they called Cooperative Building? To me that idea sounds really good.

Well hopefully they are going to make another installment of portal, it would be a complete waste and shame if they just stopped it with this Portal game. Did Valve ever mention why it was so short?

My only guess would be that they weren't overly thrilled with the story, but in my opinion the story style that Portal has is absolutely brilliant for this type of game. It manages to keep it simple yet enjoyable and mysterious.

Garry's Portal 11?

Interesting, I hadn't seen that before. It was mentioned a couple of years ago so it might have been scrapped or maybe it'll be ready for Ep3?

Trust me they won't be dropping Portals any time soon, Gabe considers them to be integral to future FPSs.
As for Portal's duration, I don't think they were ever aiming for anything longer, I think you'd be surprised at how much work went into the levels that were there not to mention the time they spent getting Portals to work properly in Source.

-_-.....
all the episodes together are half-life 3.
:sniper::dork:

THE EPISODES ARENT HL3!!! go damn i hate it when people say that. the games are hl2:ep1,ep2 etc......does that seem like hl3 to you?

also counterstrike 2 would be ridiculous. though the only thing that would really change is the weapon choice and change to a modern scenario to todays standards.

I hope you are right, they should make it a main focus, it is that good. I suspect they didn't have much confidence in it, otherwise they would have made it a more official game.

I think Portal is testing the waters so to speak.

When I playtested Portal it was a bit longer, at around the 4 hour mark.

They used to have it up around the 6 hour mark, with NPC's and everything, but due to time constraints they just stripped Portal down to the core and just made the parts remaining completely awesome. It paid off for sure because it sees if its a successful concept to move towards new games.

Hmm..I guess I can see where they are coming from, but did Valve really need to test the waters with Portal? It was a no brainer from the get go that this game would kick total ass. I really can't see anyone who likes first person shooters dislike Portal.

Agreed. While the episodes might have been named HL3 prior to them being split up, the 'Half-Life 3' title is still free to be used by future content.

WRONG!

They have planned a CS2 for years! And i CANT WAIT!

Gabe himself has said the episodes are Half-Life 3 and that they regret not calling it Half-Life 3 episode 1,2,3

That is correct as well.

i disagree with that. the game is still based on the hl2 era; with hl1 it was in a totally different location while hl2,ep1,ep2,ep3 will all be in the same story aspect.

You can disagree all you want, the creater of the game seems to think they are Half-Life 3.

Why say it is HL3? They obviously are not named it. I think that was giant's point to who he quoted. What if they decide to release another full game or episodes named HL3? You can say it COULD have been HL3. That the content in HL2 e1-ep3 would have been named HL3 if it was released as a full game. That it would have made more sense if they were HL3 EP1 etc. But there is a difference between would have been and actually is. The name isn't nailed to the content until release. And Gabe obviously calls them HL2: EP1-EP3, since that is what the box says. :p

I'm betting we are just dancing around semantics at this point though. agreed?

edit:spelling. trying web browsers and I miss FF spell checker already.

Did your play test include NPCs? If so what did they do? You've perked my curiosity :)

The creator of the games says the episodes are Half-Life 3, logical marketing says they aren't. It would be silly for them to advertise the next big Half-Life product as anything but Half-Life 3 - for name recognition sake alone.

As in, you haven't purchased or played Episode 1 or Episode 2?
Correct.

Agreed. The episodes are part of HL2. It's like saying Barbarian Invasion is Rome II: Total War. It isn't.

They may be dropping episodic games too:

I agree with this guy, even though I think he's a jackass:

Well imminently we have Left4dead arriving, which should be worthwhile, and obviously EP3 as well at some point down the line. I suspect CS2 will be in the mix, though how they will re-imagine that who honestly knows, and also with games like CoD4 out there whether they will really bother. Personally I'd really like Valve to work on a completely new IP, something RPG akin to Mass Effect, so they can really take advantage of their facial/lipsynch technology a bit more.

AHHAHAHAHAH you guys argue about the stupidest shit.

Mark Rein is an idiot; he could win some serious awards for the long list of stupid things he's had to say in his career.

HL3 hopefully. I don't buy the episodes.

Why?

Episode 3...and then probably the next Half-life game, which they have been building up to with this Episode arc.

They are defiantly working on CS2. There is no way they are just going to drop that. Personally I love it, CS has become stale to me for a couple of years now. Knowing Valve they are going to turn such a cliche(by now it is) idea of special forces vs bad guys in to something other developers as well as gamers are going to hit themselves for not thinking of.

The thing with a CS2 is, if they take a similar approach that they did to TF2 and change a bunch of things, all of the competitive players and people who have been with it for forever are going to cry and start an internet riot.

I'm just not drawn to them. They just seem like expansion packs to me and I never really buy those, not even Blue Shift/Opposing Force when they first came out.

I'd get the Orange Box but I know i'd only play TF2 for 20 minutes (like Fortress Forever) and I'm not too interested in Portal.

If you don't play the episodes, why would you even want to purchase HL3? You're going to miss a lot of story. A whole lot of story. And what's the Half-Life franchise without the story?

I recommend the episodes for the story and the excellent gameplay. I think the episodes are much more fun than Half Life 2 itself, especially Ep2. You are really missing a lot.

Yea seriously, 50 bucks for 8-12 more hours of hl2 story gameplay (and portal and tf2) is damn good. Its not like they just threw it together ya know.

LOL, I find it highly amusing that you'd waste innumerable hours of your life clocking up 6000 posts on a game franchises fan site, then feign any interest in buying their latest products, out of misguided perception. In all seriousness if you don't have a passion for subject as a whole, isn't it perhaps about time to move on to something else completely :dozey:
