Anyone know how much longer they will support hl1 mods for its been like 5 years.

Good question. I haven't thought about this one myself. Although Steam might help with this to some extent. But mod authors would have to update their mod to function with Steam. Perhaps a updated SDK for HL will come out just for the sake of adding their mods to Steam.

Also, I believe the HL2 SDK comes with the tools required to convert your existing HL mods to HL2 which would make it available over Steam. Perhaps the HL2 SDK comes with a tool for HL1 mod teams just to port their mod to Steam, but without adding HL2 support if they so desire.

In just a few weeks, ALL HL games and mods will be converted to Steam (Valve will release conversion tools to make it painless). I don't know if this is part of the SDK release, but Erik Johnson did tell us that this is what will happen (about two weeks after the steam beta ends)

From what I understand, WON has been dead for some time. Authentication is done through Valve now.

WON is part of Valve. And no it's not dead, 1.5 uses WON. Steam uses a different ID system (tickets) at the moment but that will change when 1.6 open beta ends.

good question.. they might just get rid of it if steam seems to be popular
.. but i'm not really sure

What will it change to? Will they ban WONID's genertated from serial key, or ban an ID bassed on a machines unique MAC address?

That really would stop cheaters.

Oh I dunno really. One thing I do know is that generated keys never worked online and never will because of some algorithm issue or something. My guess is that when they will keep the wonids until the end of HL1; because the "Steam Team" (lol) have told us that there will be a 1.6 patch for users who don't have steam (and that's the majority of players)... Unless usual players go through WON and Steam users go through the ticket system... I have no clue, your guess is as good as mine (maybe even better) :)
