So long has it been now since the hype desended into thin air, it seems only MODs and other games take its place. The story has been unfolded in more ways anyone could dare think up and the game has been played down to every crank and cranny.
The days before its release were the most atmospheric I had ever experienced on these forums and any forum.
Now those days have gone, it seems sad and unfortunate, that the game Valve spent so many years making, has simply dissappeared from many peoples minds. I hope the expansion brings the same atmosphere as the original Half Life 2 did. Or at least something in the near future...

How do you all feel about it? Those of you especially who were there to experience the famous lead up to Half Life 2 release.

We all knew that the bread-and-butter of HL2 was going to be MODing Source.
It was the same for HL1. Both were great games and all, but thats only 1 game that lasts a few hours. Then is when you really get your moneys worth years after the game has been out and you check out all the awesome MODs.

It's a year since HL2 is out, most people have played through it already :). You just can't expect such activity anymore. Most played through the game 1-4 times and are done with it, waiting for the mods and expansions.

HL2 is getting boring for me. lol
Only thing that keeps it alive for me are SP Mods.

I'm ready for Aftermath now. :)

Simple, the ones who waited and waited on these forums and then played the game from start to finish two, maybe three times just to let it slide out of their mind forever afterwards have all buggered off. The ones who still play the game every other week and know every piece of dialouge and obsess over every little detail are still here, only now they have 2000+ posts and are unfreindly with at least three people for their moronic, ignorant standpoint on the HL plot. THE VORTIGAUNTS REPRESENT THE ESRB! ISN'T IT OBVIOUS PEOPLE???

That's not true, the last time I played HL2, was the Lost Coast..and before that..shit I don't remember :(

I'm on OTFer.

yeah - I've played it loads of times as well. Hope the Aftermath is good.

Name a good game that came out in 2003. Exactly. The life cycle for games is painfully short, most of them forgotten a year, or even six months after the release. The market is pretty saturated right now, and it's getting harder to seperate the chaff from the wheat. Of course, every gamer has their own opinions as well, and as the number of games increases each little fan-group will grow smaller and smaller. Just accept it and move on, supporting whatever games you enjoy. Don't expect everyone else to be raving too however.

Meh, I'm pretty bored with HL2/CSS at the moment, I'm just waiting for some good mods to come out. So far none of the mods that are out really interest me all that much. So I entertain myself with other games. :p

I was still fanatically playing through HL1 a few months before HL2 came out. I've played HL2 through twice, the second time was probably about April. It's been off my computer since shortly after then. Now, I can't see me reinstalling it until Aftermath comes out, and I'm not exactly wildly excited about AM anyway.
Point being, HL1 had much greater longevity than HL2. HL2's charms were comparitively shallow and clearly shortlived.

AJ Rimmer only scares people because he speaks the truth. People are afraid of truth.

Surely you aren't reffering to my post, because in it, I reffered to the author of this thread, whose name I have carelessly forgotten.

i remember those days! How we all use to dribble over screenshots and videos, making up different possible storylines.

The best memories I had were when they begin to pre-release the content, for so long we had waited for HL2 and it was getting so close we could taste it. Also, all of the abuse we would give doom 3 fans who even tried to remotely imply that doom 3 was in anyway better than our beloved half life lol.

ive jst started playing hl2 through for the 2nd time, I forgot how much i enjoyed it. Thought id come back and see who was still knocking around :D

I'm still knocking around :naughty:

Anyway, if Half Life 2 could last as long as an MMORG, me, you and everyone would be happy. The point of this thread to be honest is the longevity of Half Life 2 and most games that are all short lived (excluding MMORGS). Then the hype of screeenshots, videos would be every day our lives

I've just finished HL2 for the 5th time right through, and I regularly rplay Water Hazard, Ravenholm and Highway 17 - my favourite levels.

Because there's still so much stuff.

Recently I found another secret area in Water Hazard, the one where the pipe takes you through underwater to the cave where the zombie jumps out at you. And, of course, there are all the G-man sightings. the HL2 crew put in a shitload of detail.

In the way of mods, there are a few good ones out at the moment (mainly I'm thinking of Combine Destiny and Lost Coast), and in a years' time there'll be hundreds out there.

Yeah, that happens with all single player games. After you've played them five times you really kinda don't want to play them again for a while. But then there's all the mods you can play, or make. Half Life 2 is one of the games that does last for a long time and people post topics like this saying that it's almost dead etc. But think about this; not every game now would have as many different active communities as this one does two years after release.

Correction: this happens to single-player shooter games ;). There are other genres where SP games are extremely alive after years..

Thats me, only with a small fraction of the post count. hehe im uber lurker baby.

And dont forget that they are doing episodic releases now. That should revive, and keep alive (wewt rhyme) the community for a good while.

Heh valve should abandon that episodic idea. They'd never be able to release games quick enough.

Before we know it Aftermath will have in development for 3 years

I know what your saying. But I think the problem is that HL2 was a victim of it's own hype. All that build up, all the problems & delays then, for many, when the game was finally released it wasn't without its problems. I fell foul to the infamous stutter bug & couldn't play the game until I'd upgraded the main components of my PC over a month or so later ........... It played better after that but still stuttered! For me HL2 was a good game at best & ultimately an anti-climax. It would have dropped of the radar all together had it not been for CSS & Source mods.

Personally i cant wait to play more Half-Life. I want more of the story told more the of the experience played.

Dont worry , ive played it again 3 times just recently. Its still the best game around i think.

I just cannt beleive that its been over a year now since it was realeased, time flys.
