i found norton antivirus extremely annoying as it slows my computer down significantly

what antivirus software do you recommend (preferably the one with small memory usage and no lag) ?

thanks!

AVG - The best AV program I have ever used either free or paid for. Free daily updates, small and quick, can't say fairer than that.

yup. I have used AVG a couple of years now and it works perfectly. Together with windows defender you're safe from virii and spyware

I don't like AVG at all, it's nice for a free antivirus, but it was never be able to remove any virus it detected and it didn't detect that much viruses either. To be sureI had to do a monthly virus check with trend micro's housecall, it's better then nothing sice it does stop some viruses.
In any case I have NOD32 right now, and I like it alot, really a lot. I do not know if it is the best, they say a lot of stuff on their main site and link to sources which claim it's the best , but it's still their main site and they would not post anything negatieve about it, still I like it a lot. And I googled it and it always comes pretty high in the rankings.

The only negatieve thing is that you cannot turn it off completly unless you disable it to start on windows boot, the core will always run and consumes about 12 mb of ram. But you can make it stop give warning or **** with games.

In any case check their site and verify the sources:

I have exactly the same experience with AVG.

I hear good things about Kaspersky.

Why don't you try F-Secure, it has up to date data bases with the latest viruses and a real time scanner that little effect on performance. I haven't had any virus related problems since I've installed this, so I strongly recommend it.

NOD32's generally regarded as one of the best.

I been using McAfee inti virus yearly superscription for the last five years and happy with it.

This is what I use. Fast scans and low system usage. Gets updates very often.

kaspersky works decent, i got it as part of an nfr from iolo. only problem is, it locks up firefox whenever i download anything(disable and auto protect and it goes back to normal) kapersky wont deal with it because i got it from someone else than them, and iolo just keeps on sending me stupid automated messages back.
other than that, one of the quickest antivirus and most effective(found a trojan that not avg, norton or trendmicro picked up)

Haven't tryed NOD32, although I also hear its the best, however, its not free, which its why I recommended AVG

avg is one of the worst...
nod32 is great value for money. its one of the cheapest antivirs, especially if you buy a 3 year license.

NOD32 and McAfee are among the top. Norton gets hacked easily and is bulky. NOD32 is very strong, cheap, and small installation. NOD32 is using ~30MB of disc space and updates almost everyday which is another reason I like it so much. I haven't gotten infected yet with NOD. I haven't had much experience with McAfee, but I saw tests performed with multiple AVs and NOD32 and McAfee were the top 2. AVG is ok, but seems bulky and I don't really want something "free" that should be protecting me from a lot of bugs out there.

I really don't know the level of "goodness" of AVG but I use the free one and it seems to be ok, updates daily and everything. The reason I don't know if it works good though is becuase it has never found anything(virus's/trojans), Either I don't have anything or I just have a false sence of security.:|
I havent "really" tried any others but the family computer has mcaffee on it and its so damn annoying...
So in conclusion i would give AVG a try.:) Hope that helps you somewhat...

NOD32 for me. Small footprint and it's pretty good at catching them according to what I've read. I don't know where people go or what they do, but I've only seen two viruses in the 'wild', and they were both from the computer lab at college.

OK OK It is a harmless EICAR Virus and it should activate your Anti-virus accordingly. (Note: Cancel once antivirus is activated).
If Anti-virus isn't activated then your antivirus is useless. However you should update your antivirus and windows regularly.
I usually look for updates rather than updates looking for me.

NOD32 is awesome. I was looking at F-Shaw Secure status and everything wasn't even working, it was 'malfuctioned'
