Sweet mother of God, you do too!? Very rare, but I love those guys (and girl)! One of my favorite bands, just because they are so irreverant but catchy.

Same here! I played Science Genius Girl like five hundred times. After that I started checking into them and once I heard "Harebrained Scheme" I was lost forever.

I don't know much about the first three, but Heavy Metal and Death Metal are extremely different. Also, in my opinon, one sucks and the other rules the face of the planet. Try to guess which ;)

Fave genre(s): Thrash metal, progressive/experimental, blah blah.

Bands: Destruction, Testament, Sodom, Agressor, Bells of Insanity, Kreator, Anthrax, Pink Floyd, Tony Levin Band, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Yes, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta, LTW, At The Drive-In, Pennywise, Boyhitscar,

etc.

I have to say thats the first time I've ever seen Anthrax, The Mars Volta, and Peter Gabriel on the same list.

I know, I know. I get a lot of flak, though, from people who think every genre of techno is the same.

So here's my theory: Every type of music you listen to sounds the same to everyone who DOESN'T listen to that type of music because they are are not used to those differences that you can hear because you listen to that type of music (run on sentence!)

i.e. Pretty much every rock band I've heard recently sounds the same to me because I'm not picking up on their differences. Meanwhile, I can instantly tell the difference between techno groups.

Electronica, or IDM to be specific. Just look anything up in that subgenre and I'll probably like it.

I agree 100% - even though I made that comment, I can't differentiate between other subgenres of other music styles. My friend was listening to Athlete and it just sounded like Coldplay to me, and I'm sure to someone in the know, they sound quite different.

I get told that the 'Heavy Metal' I'm listening to is awful, and it really grates with me... I then inform them of key differences - how the whole Metal genre has about 8 or 9 main sections, and I get a completely blank stare :hmph:

Yep. Irritates me too, when people look startled/bland/amused when I inform them of the different types of techno. I don't begrudge anyone for what they listen to (although I do mock the Emokids - but I don't mean it). You like what you like and it's none of my business. I just wish some people would not instantly deride my choice of entertainment.

Ah well. My friends all know, and the people at the clubs I go to agree with me. So, :bounce:, yo!

I constantly shit on my friends' music tastes. Most of it is simply taking the piss, but I won't deny that I garner some sense of superiority in that aspect when I compare my intricate beats to their screaming and whining. Usually my bitching is met with criticisms of electronica being easier to make and taking less time.

In the end, screw it. Making music with a computer may require less time, but then it's also an entirely different form of music production and any comparison is irrelevant. You hit a snare, I hit a button. You do a wah-wah, I tweak my LFO's. You sing, I manage my mixing. You tune your guitar, I program my synth. Who cares? You'll either jive with it or you won't. Tastes vary. No point in getting into a hissy fit over it.

I've always held, however, the belief that electronic music has far more potential than traditional methods.

Totally, and QFT.

When you think about it, these are people who do everything by themselves. It is recorded, produced, and mixed by one person doing everything. They are phenomonal creative talents who have their hands and brains intricately meshed with what they do. They themselves have ultimate creative control over the music they love. Hell, at their live shows they often remix and remaster their music on on the fly. I sure as hell couldn't do that and respect anyone who could.

Bare in mind that this is done by many people, reglardless of what type of music it is. When recording GCSE music peices, I usually do all the drumming, guitar work, bass and vocals myself as no one in my tech class is remotely intrested in some peices I choose to submit, which is fine by me, 'cause I enjoy making music. Not that help isn't apprecieted, but its a fun experience. Just last week I did the entire of Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, mixed it, edited it then sent it off to the exam board. Its not exactly a hard peice to do (although getting the timing I messed up abit..), but its still all my own work.

EDIT: I mean its all my own work as in all my own drumming and stuff, not the song itself. Thats Floyds.

Metal pwns (not including nu-metal, and anything that ends with "core")

favourite bands probably the usual...Maiden, Metallica, Sabbath. Children of Bodom are one of the few modern bands that I respect.

Yes, yes, but I'm referring to techno. Of course it varies from artist to artist, but most common is that these artists are doing the creative aspect entirely on their own. I know there are people involved in recording and releasing these songs, but from a creative point of view they are doing it all themselves.
