This topic has probably been addressed in other threads, but I keep getting a rude error trying to use the search function (lousy 26.4k dial up modem connection), so...

What are some of the best single player mods available for the original Half Life / Opposing Force / Blue Shift ?

Bonus points if they focus less on combat and more on story, characters, etc.

I remember playing one years ago, a "horror" one that was a lot of fun... It Hungers? The Hungry? Something like that.

I've recently been playing a lot of Deus Ex mods... Zodiac, Presidential Emergency, Burden of 80 proof, Der Zeit Mann, etc., and I thought I'd check to see what single player mods exist for Half Life.

Thanks for your input!

They Hunger.

Hmmmmm, if you have such a slow connection I wouldn't say PC gaming is for you. Especially with todays standards with updates and the massive growth of online multiplayer. Buy a ps2 or a xbox and buy EDGE (Gaming Magazine) read the reviews each month to get ideas of which games to buy and which not to.

If you can't afford a ps2 or an xbox (there has to be a good reason why u still have 28.6k) then buy a psx and buy old games like final fantasy VII and the resident evil series.

I hope this helped even though its compeltely not what you asked for :P

Yep, definately They Hunger, it might not ever win _best looking_ mod. But it had tons and tons of atmosphere, and some truly creepy moments. The nurse in the hospital and the guy standing behind boxes were really creepy, especially when you were low on ammo at the time.

I think I'm one of the few though who are waiting in vain for a Source version of it. Really a big shame :(

As for The Hunger, that was some modern day vampire movie with David Bowie. Could never sit through it without getting bored and switching off.

I remeber this french half life mod. You were gordon and played through more levels and things like that.

im stuck on they hunger.. :( i dont know where to go

These are the best in my opinion:

They Hunger (A Zombie mod, nice atmosphere but not much to look at by today's standards)

Poke646 (great looking urban-set mod, definately one of the best in terms of overall presentation, but nothing new gameplay-wise)

Point Of View (play as an Alien Slave. It's a bit tough, but it's interesting none-the-less)

Heart of Evil (Vietnam mod, you can tell a lot of work went into this one. Plenty of scripted sequences, with an Apocalypse Now-inspired story)

Todesangst (Great Half-Life mod, but nothing overly fancy. You also hear Gordon talk in the second one, if that's any incentive)

Azure Sheep (Decent mod where you play as a Barney security guard, before Blue Shift was made. One of the better early mods)

Half-Life: Invasion (A few nifty , if somewhat underused, features, but otherwise straight up Half-Life action)

Case Closed (You've played a scientist, a soldier and a security guard...now play as the Janitor! Unfortunately, not much more than a map pack, but it has some interesting levels)

Thanks for the information everyone. I'm stuck on this dial-up due to location - rural Tennessee with no option for broadband, and 50-year old phone lines that drop the connection every hour or so and can't support above a 28.8k connection for more than a few minutes. Without GetRight I'd probably be punching holes in the wall . My system itself is pretty decent - Athlon64 2800+, Radeon 9800 pro, but the internet connection really does make me be very choosy in what I want to try. When an 8 meg file takes you an hour to download, you get pretty choosy about content. Oh well, I know that this connection will keep me honest, so I'll never be a pirate :p

KagePrototype, that's awesome, exactly what I was hoping to find.

Atmostphere, Characters, Story, etc... The Dark Elf that's what I like to find. If I want straight-up killing stuff I'll go for Unreal Tournament.
I did not know there were other parts to They Hunger! Who knows, in 9 hours I might be enjoying some more horror-themed gaming fun :)
