Thinking about it, The Combine use them, and I believe they also control them.
In then first game the Xen aliens were enslaved.
So where does the leave the Headcrabs, they didnt have any thing that would make it look like the were being controlled...so are they from the same place as the Combine? are they from Xen and just didn't need to be forced? are they from other place?

They're most definatly from Xen: The Gonarch / Big Momma is a mother headcrab that spawns adolescent headcrabs, and is found in Xen. Essentially they're just wildlife from an exotic world: whilst we have Foxes or Squirrels, Xen has Houndeyes and Headcrabs.

They're on Earth because of the "resonance cascade" of HL1. Basically, animals and races native to Xen were teleported to earth whether they wanted to be here or not: Now they remain because no-one has rounded them up and sent them back.

Headcrabs are from Xen, but Xen was also under combine control for a long period of time. Given their practice of using other species as weapons, it seems to me that the gonarchs are being used as a biological weapon, dispensing the headcrabs which are then distributed around the world.

In HL1, Nihilanth says "what have you done?" when you kill the gonarch and heacrabs won't attack vortiguants, which suggests that the Gonarch has some sort of importance to his army.

So, that leads me to believe that he was responsible for warping in at least a few of the headcrabs. With Nihilanth no longer able to warp the crabs, the combine had to distribute them manually with the mortar shells.

wherever they come from ther're great fun for acuracy practice.

Hmm..that's a good question.

Were the combine actually using the headcrabs as weapons long before Xen?
Did the Gonarch actually only appear on Xen because one of the headcrabs successfully grew into a big momma?
HL2 asks too many questions :-\

the combine cant control xen because kliener or alys i think says they havent mastered local teleportation coz they dont know about xen or they cant use it as a loop or sumthing, i think they just use the headcrabs in placed they dont want to go or places that they dont wanna wast troops on

WHat? You understand what the Nihilanth says? It sounded like it was talking nonsense to me

also those rockets tht smash nto the ground near the start which release headcrabs...who fires them?

Supposedly the Combine.

There are whole threads devoted to transcriptions of what it says... search time!

I don’t think that proves that they couldn’t have gotten to xen using their own version of teleportation. That would kind of be like saying… humans can’t control earth because they don’t understand everything about it yet…

The last, you are the last.

You are man, he is not man, for you he waits, for you.

Thieves, you all are thieves.

Slaves, we are their slaves, we are their slaves

Done, what have you done?

They were quite clear to me. hehe

But the thing I really hate 'bout headcrabs is that its really hard to know if their dead. I swear, I unloaded a whole SMG Mag onto a Headcrab, only to find out that it was already shot by a Resistance Fighter -.-

Since the Combine use quite a few Headcrabs to pacify areas where resistance are known to be, would it not be easier if they were breeding Gonarchs rather than teleporting each headcrab to earth?

Hmm, I was wondering - why make a bunch of whimpering humans aka the resistance tougher by giving them talons and looks mothers wouldnt love? Wouldnt the combine be substituting humans for a bigger 'infestation'?

Well the zombies are most likely going to starve to death, seeing as there's barely any fresh meat to eat around ravenholm, so it kinda takes care of itself.

Plus, the zombies clearly don't have brains enough to try and co-ordinate any massed attack, or the digits necessary to wield a projectile weapon any more advanced than a chunk of debris. The few that do wander out of Ravenholm get capped by the snipers.

Considering that there's little evidence that the headcrabs can bond with Xen fauna, I also wonder if they were a Combine creation in use long before the Resonance Cascade. The 'crab mortars in the second game hint that the Combine held onto at least one method of production, so either they're drawing remaining headcrabs from Xen or harvesting the young of a second (or more) Gonarch(s).

They are sure as hell not 'controlled' by the combine, just used as a weapon *cough*ravholm**cough* also considering that if I spawn a zombie or headcrap in front of some overwatch they kill it.

LOL:E
Headcrap!

I'm not sure about headcrabs being native to Xen, because they dont really have any prey there(ever seen a non-human zombie?), so they would die out perhaps. Maybe they are combine designs.
And if you think about it, that Factory in Interloper looks an awful lot like the inside of the citadel. Only the citadel is manufacturing the overwatch forces, the Interloper is manufacturing Alien Grunts.

lol the headcrabs are from xen .. how they got to earth ? they were brought there by rockets :) lol dunno why but thats what i can figure out !
