I couldn't find the search feature so I make a new topic.

Where are the MDL files? I've installed the import pluging for max 6. I can use the model viewer through steam. The problem is that the mdl files are compiled into some other sort of archive.

I tried to harvest the path name from the model viewer, but steam puts [root] where the relevant path name should be.

Searched my hard drive for *.mdl with no luck

What I want to do is get the whole HL2 rig into max and have a look at how the biped is put together, the hitboxes etc... so that I can create a new character mesh and put it into a mod and use the default animations.

Any tutorial links. I'm not finding a lot on this.

Oh my bad. wasn't logged in correctly. found the search feature

Ok, so I've found out that you can decompile the gcf files with GCFScape.

Lately I've noticed that all of the links on the 'net go back to Nemesis' page, which from the error message I get has a major error going on.

Anyone know of any alternate sourced for GCFScape?

I wouldn't bother getting GCFScape from a mirror, it's updated regulaly to keep up with changes to the GCF format, so you want to get the newest version.

I get a corrupt data base error message when trying to go the creator of GCFScape's site.

Where is the current version of GCFScape?

regardless, you won't be able to decompile the .mdl files for halflife 2, so it's a moot point.

however, if you had looked around a bit in the sourcesdk [specifically where is says sample content, you would have found the source .xsi files from cs:s. (ctrike_sample_content/model_sources/urban)
Convert to make format, and then viola!

Ok, so thanks to Sidewinder for the tip.

For everyone's benefit. GCF scape is available from several sources on the 'net. This is the utility you need to extract files from the .gcf archives. In order to run it you neet the .net framework from micorsoft. If you get an "application failed to initialize" it's because you don't have the .net framework installed.

I finally got GCFScape running and extracted a .mdl file. He is quite correct. When using the .mdl importer currently available for max 6 from www.maxplugins.de you will get an error message saying "version 44 incompatible".

I assume this is a version of .mdl file.

bob the builder made an importer that worked, valve shut him down. The new mdl format is different
