Hi guys! I'd like to make my own mod for Half-Life 2. I have very, very little expierence with anything that would relate to modding. I have followed basic tutorials for Maya two years ago and just did a tutorial for making maps in Unreal Tournament 2004. Where do I go from here? What tools do I need?

Thanks in advance,
Sed

Wow, why is it mod forums like this always flame the noob who asks for a polite pointer in the right direction, with all the wanna-be 'Games designers' out there and millions of mod sites containing nothing but half finished tuts and abandoned projects, is it any wonder that people get lost and confussed in the swamp of mis-information.

It aint like the skills are dificult or all that complicated, it's just shielded well and hidden from the general public, not that I'm saying anyone can mod, you need talent, and a fek load of time on your hands, to be able to do it, but the use of a few specific PC progs and plug-ins, isn't one of them, nor is net trawling :)

A list of stuff to look into would be a good sticky, a where to start guide for all the different areas of the Mod community.

Surely a larger more diverse Mod community is better than a bitter introverted elitist one?

Sorry if I come off as bitter, just that I seem to spend an awful lot of time chasing tutorials around looking for those gems of info that you guys seem to hold onto like gold, and when I do get hold of them, they are incomplete, assuming more knowledge about the apps than they are teaching, or go no way near something that would be actualy useful in a mod.

'Do some research' and providing a web address is probably constructive, actually. The Valve ERC thing has some of the most in-depth guides to coding, mapping, and everything-ing. Admitted, many do flame away on these boards, but try not to pin it on those undeserving of rants.

Well, IchI's tone was rather rude.

Anyways Sed Bratton, just folow the link provided, keep reading and do some more of them tutorials. You'll pick up soon enough :)

Ichi, I apologise the rant was not intended as a personal attack, I just need to vent my frustration, at eternally running into dead ends while chasing the 'Golden' tutorials.

I don't think he sounded rude at all but at least you appologized. Sed since you are admittedly not the most experienced person in the world I would suggest joining a team as opposed to starting your own, but that is just my advice. Anyways I think you'll find this link helpful:

Thanks for the guidance. I think I will take the suggestion of joining a team. Maybe I'll start with mapping since I have had a brief introduction using UnrealEd. Hopefully I will be able to pick the skills necessary to progress to the next level of modding and eventually start my own mod team.
