Where does all this leave the SDK..?

First of all, I'd like to say hello to everyone. I've been a part of the Half-Life community since before the original came out, but just recently have moved myself from the PHL forums to these. Anyways, on to business...

With this soure code fiasco I now wonder where this leaves the SDK Valve said they would release before HL2 goes gold...? Will mod developers now have to wait until a while after it goes gold for the kit now... or is it still scheduled to release before HL2? Just a thought I've been having is all.

Yeah... *ponders*

I think that... they will release it after the actual release now... kinda hard enough for them to finish the game, let alone polish up the SDK.

Or if we are lucky... it comes with the game...

Welcome to the forums, great first topic btw
But this also makes you wonder what happened to the benchmark that was due on the 30th.

Hi Umbrella Master, agree'd with Sushi, good first post, and during this time where us headcrabs are getting a bad time of it its appreciated :)

As for the SDK, nobody really knows, I think though they could possibly get away with leaving the SDK for a month or so after the game is released, many I think will want to play the game first, and work out just what its really capable, then probably try out all the new features that Hammer likely has. By then the SDK could be released and those interested could move onto that. I think many will just be happy to have the game arrive to begin with, and there is still a lot that you'll be able to do without the SDK, apparantly a lot of tools will be shipped along with the standard version, hammer, face poser etc. So only those like myself planning more complex customised features will be really in need of the SDK, but I don't mind waiting if the game is there to keep me occupied :)

Ah, but imagine this: If Valve releases the SDK before the game's release, mods will be released in the first monthes of the game's lifecycle. You finish HL2, get tired of it's multiplayer... look on Halflife2.net and WHAM... look at that! A new mod already! How exciting would that be eh? Of course, thats just my dream.... my pleasant pleasant dream I wish to come true some day... :)

I think the SDK comes with the game. And sushi please shorten your sig, 4 lines, forum rule.

It's doubtful, a decent mod will take upwards of six months to make, longer even. The first things thats likely to turn up will be multiplayer maps with lots of physics, single player fun test maps with lots of physics, stuff like that, lots of fun yet simple things while people start to get used to the new features. And as I said, apparantly there's a good deal going to be included with the standard version anyway, so unless your rewriting code, adding new weapons and such like, you wont need the SDK. and no full mod of any calibre is going to be done in the time it takes to complete the game. Tutorials for the physics will probably turn up first aswell (expect a lot of physics stuff cause thats the immediate interesting stuff people will want to play with) then I imagine they'll be the face poser tutorials and so on. You wont see anything decent done with the SDK done within a number of months of its release, for good stuff to come out from it around the time people complete the full game, it would have to be released now if the game is due April 2004, or a few months ago if its due sometime in November

Of course that doesn't take into account the two/three? teams who already have the SDK and are working with Valve on their mods. So they might still turn up early

I understand what you mean though, you've got this kick ass PC that can play this kick ass new game with a kick ass new engine, absolutely natural to want to just keep trying new stuff with it. I gotta say I've never been excited like this about a simple game before... well actually I did once, with the first Half-Life, up until very recently I still had fun doing stuff in that. But then that doesn't mean much, it was also only recently I stopped editing Doom :D

We can but hope eh. Feels just like it does waiting for christmas, the waiting is the best bit, here's hoping the playing the game ends up being the best bit, and that its not over as quickly as christmas always is! lol

Off topic: Fenic joined us in Oct, lets say Oct 1st, that means he has posted at least 100 replys in 14 days. Simply amazing.

On topic: I think the SDK will come with the game, prolly because they have it done, and are just finishing up the game and recovering from the source/game theft.

off topic: sorry....

I also wonder where the hell the benchmarking tool is? except for Valve being busy doing other things following recent events....it doesn't really make much sense that this is delayed, and I don't think it would take THAT much effort releasing it. also didn't game sites etc. get it? why not the gamers? as I see it Valve could win over some fans by releasing either benchmarking tool, new media or in general just give word on what they're doing and where the development with HL2 stands. IMO the silence is hurting the relation ship with the fans.

again sorry for the off topic stuff.

as for the SDK I don't think I can add anything that haven't already been said in previous posts.

I bet the full sdk isnt in the mid sku, but will have the basic tools.

the premium sku will probably have the full sdk

and it will be able to be downloaded through steam

I'm deffinetly not one of the "They should release HL2 now" morons, but I do really want to get my hands on the SDK. Right now, I've got the motivation to start modeling and coding, but doing it blindly wont do me much good.

I bet that was Valve's plan, too..their dream..which was why they were making HL2 so MOD friendly...

up until you know what happened....

sad

I know that Hammer was released in the leak and some other tools used in making a mod. I know a friend that is evaluating the tools to see how they work. He says that he will not start Hammer work until the SDK gets released officially.

If valve releases the SDK now wont people with the illegal beta be able to add stuff to it? that wouldnt be good

i doubt the sdk will be released before the game, just because valve does not want to give the people with the beta anymore material to work with.

Well, speaking as a mod developer myself (see sig) I sincerly hope the SDK is released before the game.

However, my team's coders are currently looking at the hl1 sdk and seeing how we would implemnt things in hl1 to have a better understanding of how we would do it in hl2. And i'm sure some of my coders got a hand on the hl2 source, and browsing through that could only shorten the time between hl2 release and mod release.

Chances are they're having to rewrite the code of HL2 and the SDK to make the beta with both. I'd say the little ****er delayed the game and the SDK at least a month.

I'm guessing the SDK will probably come out in 2 weeks, but it could be much longer. With all of the free time we all have, it would probably be best for valve to release the SDK a.s.a.p. We end up being almost done with creating the MODs by the time the game comes out, and it would be a decent distraction from recent events (and valve's silence) to have everyone watching the MODs develop.

why would you have to rewrite the sdk?

why would they work on the sdk and not work on the actual game?

I bet the sdk wont be released until the game is on the shelves because of the hack.

The only thing I wish valve would do is release a beta Hammer with the orange texture, and a human model so the map can be built to scale. It would shut up a lot of the modders and mappers

lets think back to when HL1 was released.. (i bought my copy the day it came out) what i remember from those days is, regular HLDM was quite popular in those days for about 1.5 years after the release, then CS came.. and took over and then Opposing Force and then a bunch of mods were released including the popular DoD..

my point in all this? for the most part, whatever HL2 regular death match is, will keep most of us busy for a good year anyway.. maybe more since everyone seems so impressed with what we have seen of HL2.

even if the SDK is released 1 or 2 months after the actual release of the game, that still gives mod devs 1 year... (maybe more.. 2?) to created a mod and release it.. now i dunno how long it takes for a mod to be created and released, but at least these devs have 1 year head start.. assuming pple will be pre-occupied with HL2 SP and regular MP

agreed? :)
