I am trying to decide which Athlon 64 I should buy. I think I have narrowed it down to two, but I'm not sure which one is a better processor.

First one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1366613

or Second one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103539

Notice that the 3700+ has 1 MB cache but only 1GHz bus speed and the 3500+ has a 2GHz bus speed but only a 512 Kb cache. So is cache more important or is bus speed more important. What are the benefits of both? Thanks to anybody who is willing to explain this stuff to me.

I really don't know. I'd guess the 3700+, just because it's got a bigger number behind it, but that's just me :D

The 3700+. It's pretty much the same as the 3500+ but has an extra 512k cache which helps it when executing lots of code/data.

I have the 3700+ and i find it to be very fast. No problems with it yet either.

It's also a good overclocker. I can get it to 2.8GHz stable (stock its at 2.2GHz). It runs a bit warm but if you've got an good airflow then you could overclock it pretty well.

It's only an extra $10?
Definately go with the 3700+ then.

I hate tigerdirect ..never have anything you actually want in stock, their prices are higher than anyone else and their customer service sucks ..at least the canadian version does

so you are saying that you think newegg made a typo and the 3700+ that they have listed is actually 2000 MHz FSB instead of 1000 MHz FSB?

I think theres a price issue here...
-.-

X2's are hunreds more.

But yeah, this whole 1ghz and 2ghz Bus thing is odd... looking into it now..

Yes. The 3700+ has a 2000MHz bus.

Go with the 3700+.
1MB L2 cache instead of 512KB for not much more.
They also use a different core but otherwise it's the same exact thing.

FYI they can say 2000MHz HT but it's really marketing. Technically it's 1GHz UP and 1GHz Down transfer (Full Duplex).
You don't add your upload and dowload speeds on internet do you?? :)

Or you could save up more money and buy a dual core processor.

Seeings that they can be more than twice as much, I dont think he'd wanna wait...
Besides, with todays games, dual cores dont do that much better.

Some pretty good Dual Core Processors are on the market for cheap right now.

the two i can think of are the -

Athlon 64 x2 3800+ Manchester

Toms hardware review:

or the

AMD Opteron 165 Denmark

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103588

Aperantly from Anandtech forums the Opteron is better for Oc'ing potentially but both have been oc'ed to like 2.7 - 3 ghz on stock fans. i guess it comes down to pricing, how ever i think the x2 might be better for gaming, seeing as how opteron is generally a server processor.

I dont know if the Opteron is better, ive heard it might be, i havent seen any real reviews on it, but id be sad if it were because i just bought an athlon 64 x2 3800+ which is a very good processor!

I have a question...

I gotta take my old heatsink off my processor, what should I use to clean off all the gunk? I'm guessing alcohol and a rag?

I used nail polish remover.
But you can use alcohol if you have some. (I'm pretty sure you can anyway)

Which is better, an X2 card or an FX-59 of the same clockspeed?

Id say an X2 if you overclock it to the FX-59 but im basing that on price of the cpu and preformance. There really isnt a need to buy an fx-59
