Which is easier to code: HL or HL2?

I start college this fall. I will be going into computer programming. Along with what I'll learn there, I am considering picking up some coding books. ("For Dummies..." or the like.) At anyrate here's my question: Which would be easier to put my learning to the test, coding-wise: Half-Life, or Half-Life 2? Or is C++, C++ and it doesn't matter what the game is?

I'd say HL2 is much easier, there's far more help, apps and tutorials already than HL had early on, yeah there's more work involved but on a whole its less of a hassle more time spent being creative.

Hl2 is most likely a tad better, although with hl1 you have tons of open source mods that you can snipits from.
