well, i'm not knowing anything about the next Media Update, but i was just thinking which level you'd like to see if there was a choice? just want to know your opinion.

NOTE1: the Nihilanth level is not mentioned due to several reasons. one of them is the lack of being able to have more than 10 choices in a poll.
NOTE2: the levels included in the poll are those we haven't seen a Media from yet, power up, since it's being worked again, is included in the list.
NOTE3: if you want to, you can post a specific place in any chapter, for ex. "the test room/Anomalous Materials"

I'd personally love to see Xen, for the following reasons:

1. See the artistic flair of the mappers really shine, because it's the artiest place in the HL series.
2. Make sure they've not put anything Combine on it. Because I'll get them in their sleep if you do.

I'm on the same par as the Lawyer, Xen will be able to put Source to the limits if the mappers want it too.

And i don't think they'll be stupid enough to put combine-esk objects on Xen.

True; good for me that I have a brother that smokes,i know really how bad it becomes after too long.

On Topic: But I still think they're more trying to mirror HL1 not change it to suit their views.

Definitely the "On a Rail" chapter. One of my least favourite chapters in the game... yeah, I want to see what they have managed to do with it.

Xen: I'm in the same boat as AL. I wanna see it just for pure curiosity of whether they've eliminated any silly jumping puzzles by incorporating more interesting puzzles. With the physics engine (specifically with reference to weights and loads) I can imagine a lot could be done with making some fun and bizarre puzzles within the relatively unrestricted 'confines' of Xen.

I want Xen to be a surprise. I want to see some of the other stuff, like the Lambda core.

Yeah, they do say 'curiosity killed the cat'. In this case I'd presume my playing experience would be the cat, so maybe I don't want to know too much about Xen.

well, i think Xen should be a surprise as some mentioned... it's just the feeling you get after hours of playtime, and then, just as you leave to xen and the screen fades back in, you see this amazing atm. that'll probably be a real great moment playing bm(s).
but i don't know why i voted Xen, i'd choose questionable ethics really...

I think Xen's what we're most anticipating, and that's why the 'gimme now' child in us wants to see screens of it in the next update. What I'm sure of now is that I don't want any more screenshots of "WOW" areas, like the damn or like that part where you come out of a sewage pipe into a vista of the surrounding mountains. Even though looking back at the skybox now it doesn't seem that special, it was a really nice moment in the game.

i wonder if others thinks like you too... i do.:)
if so, i don't think it'll be a bad idea to tell them what members of a great hl fan site think... i'm pretty sure they'll take it into consideration...

Xen. I don't want to see them stray from the essence of Xen, like they have Black Mesa really. Xen was awesome, for me, and I don't want to see that ruined.

No, I don't think submitting this to them will help any. What a few members of hl2.net think, is not whats best for the next media update. Its for the team to decide, not what public pressure and/or opinion decides.

public pressure: never, if i were talking about asking them to give more media releases, sooner, that would be putting pressure on them by going like:"WHERE'S THAT MEDIA UPDATE? HUH?"
public opinion: it's what their work is based on, they ask people what they think about a level, and they ask them to give opinions and what would make it look more intresting, people give opinions, they work on it, and they release a media shot. people tell them the negative points, they try and fix it, the work gets better.

umm, not really, the only map that didn't give the actual feeling of blackmesa, was the inbound, and as they said, that map is going to be revised...

Yes really. It’s based on opinion, and in my opinion, it looks nothing like Black Mesa. The only map that you didn't feel had the actual Black mesa feel was Inbound. In my opinion, none of the maps shown have portrayed Black Mesa.

I really don't think saying to them "Hey guys. This is a poll. On this poll we voted what we'd like to see next." is any good. It’s simply not worthwhile. The team know their strengths, they know what’s progressed the most in the last few months of development and they know what’s most fruitful for public showing.

I find it unlikely we'll see any Xen screenshots for a long time.

i never said anything about your opinion, i meant mine when i said not really. i didn't know i should go like "in my opinion, not really..." samon, you need to calm down, if locking this thread makes you feel any better, do it.

Back up a little.

Thats what I said. I told you why I thought you shouldn't notify them of this poll, and you went very serious about the whole affair. You said,

And I'm pretty sure they won't. They will release media based on whats looking good, whats coming on best and whats fine tuned for the next media release. Its not a case of "Oh look, some forum members like Xen the most." "Yeah, but we've an unbrushed platform with a flimsy skybox." "Release it anyway they want Xen!"

It doesn't work like that. The poll is merely opinion based, not whats expected to happen. This isn't me being over the top, this me telling you exactly what I think.
In saying

You clearly didn't factor opinions, you did in fact say it as though it was general opinion/fact. And yes, you really should say "Well in my opinion, I believe it was certainly Black mesa like."

There is no reason to lock it, your simply going over the top since I decided openly I didn't think showing them this poll was any worthwhile. Its simply not good for developement to concentrate on tuning things for a media release, instead of the actual game release. A mod is nothing until it actually releases something playable.

What about Interloper? I found that to be a superior Level Desighn (and to look better) than Xen by far.

Alien factory ftw!

umm,
1st) they've said they won't be releasing anything for a time after the mod of the year awards..

2nd) i should learn to use sarcasm tags

3rd)
A mod is nothing until it actually releases something playable.
not really...

j/k, agreed.

Interloper, whilst fun, was abit of a slap on the wrist level design wise...it was pretty mish mash messy. And the factory looked far too human.

The factory, however, had some pretty texturing work :D

I personally liked the Factory. It proved that the Xenians were more than just wild animals, but a civilisation capable of rather large war efforts.

I don't want to see Xen. It would just spoil it.

A lot of things go into media releases for us. The big things are what we have and what we want to show. Original plans were not to show anything from Surface Tension (as it was receiving extensive overhauls in size and detail and we wanted it to be a surprise for everyone) and other chapters. However as time goes on we want to make sure we're making the total conversion Half-Life and not our-Half-Life. While being the developers we are going to add some pieces here and there as to what we think could look better, the focus is still on Half-Life.

Polls like this tell us what people want, but as was said: we aren't going to push anything out the door until its finished. We've reached a point where we have captivated audiences around the community and it's now time to show them how all those puzzle pieces come together into the final version. This year is our 'Year of the Custom Content' where the primary focus will be on getting skins, models, weapons, NPCs, textures and other such materials into the game and functioing properly. The next media we want to show you is something we deem 'in-game', much like our first in-game media show we gave out in December.

We've known people want to see Xen, but we won't be releasing anything from the chapter in terms of level design shots and in-game shots until later this year, more than likely, if at all, near the end. We want to make sure we get the first half done right before moving to the second, more desired, half of the project.

Questionable Ethics. I just love that level and want to see maybe a gauss gun render. :p

I never ever want to see Xen until release but I would like to see some action shots(if they are that far) of Questionable Ethics. :)

I don't think they've even started any Xen levels.

yeah i thought so, but by this thread, i understand two things:
1st:which level people most liked in HL1.
2nd:which level the bm(s) team should be real careful not to screw up.

No, not really. Whilst I'm sure a few people did vote with that in mind, I know I for one didn't want to see Xen because its my favourite chapter - far from it. I don't really want to see my favourite chapters simply because seeing them is nothing compared to playing them.

Artistically Xen is superb, and that’s why I'm interested in seeing how much they differ from it, or hopefully stick by it. But other than that I can safely say the majority would certainly not have voted Xen were it be based on their favourite chapter.
