Which Patch?

So, I just got the game, and there seems to be tons of versions of patches, also some in the form of .zip, .rar, .exe, and even .cab.

Can someone be kind enough to point me to the right links

2. And what the hell is with the shadows, why do they all look grainy, is there any way I can sharpen them?

Which game?
GTA IV has no patches, afaik.

GTA SA however has a downgrader, which you need if you got the Second Edition of it, it allows you to use mods and SA-MP.

If you're not sure, get it from Rockstar's official patch page here. Both v1.0.1.0 and 1.0.2.0 are there but I'm not sure if you need to install them in order or not.

And shadows are pure crap and will continue to remain crap. They looked okay on the console because everything was blurred. To turn on the console blur, press P.

No universal blur. Improved Depth of Field. Improved shadows. Proper motion blur. I am using Tweak 6 as the shadow smoothing also reduces detail slightly, which I don't want. I can live with grainy shadows, as these usually are only an eyesore at around 11am. It is just the motion blur I really wanted, and wow does it improve the game

Sadly still no sign of AA on the horizon though.

The only way to enable Anti-aliasing and get perfectly smooth shadows is supersampling(running twice the resolution).
You're gonna need something like a GTX275/285 SLI or a Radeon 5870 to get ~30FPS with 1920*1080 and maxed settings though, if your resolution is lower it will work much faster(1650 will only require about half the pixels)
