This whole Steam concept sounds like the "Patriot Act" equivalent of game registration. I received a free coupon with my video card for what I thought was a copy of Half-Life 2. That isn't the case though, is it. The coupon is only good for the download version and I can only download the game if I install that Steam crap.

Guess what? They got me - I'm not playing their game.

Both the download version AND retail version both use and REQUIRE Steam.
