There is no doubt about it. We all feel uncomfortable around mutes. Although gaming developers keep on indicating that its so that the player feels like he is the character, I say you feel unattached with the character.

The reason I say that is because its all down to psychology. If you knew how your character talked, how the person reacts to news and problems, then you eventually share the same reaction and you become mentally the character.

I also believe its an artifact left over by the earliest FPS's. DOOM for example came on floppy disks, and obviously didn't have enough storage capacity to store oral media. Duke Nukem 3D, however did come on CD, and so the birth of the cheesy one liners occured. Now that we have the technology, there is no reason why we couldn't do this more often.

The biggest perpetrators are Doom3 and Quake4, they both contain cinematics and the characters are present, but with their mouths shut, as they are the main characters in the game, then they must supply some sort of oral role. I can understand why they can't give Gordon Freeman a voice, he didn't have a voice in HL1, so it would be hard giving him a voice in the 2nd, and 3rd episodes as well as the addons.

What is your view on all of this?

Half Life 2 is the biggest perpetrator in my opinion.

But I agree, I'm sick of this "YOU ARE THE MAIN CHARACTER!" crap. I play games to be other characters. And it would be nice to connect with your character and thats only through voice overs and conversations between NPCs.

I pretty much agree. though it's not that big of a deal to me, but several times I felt compeled to speak and for them to hear me. instead of my character talking or no talking.

SOCOM on PS2 had a voice chat microphone that you could even use offline--commanding your squad by simple voice commands...

might be cool to be able to change the outcome of a story game by talking into a microphone, but you will inevitably get "im sorry, i don't understand" over and over LOL

it would have to be like yes or no or something, then its like whats the point.

It might be cooler to have a choice of responses and have your character say the one you select.

Mutes are okay is certain situations. GTA 3, for example wouldn't be hardly the same with the main character talking. Now-a-days, main characters almost need a voice or it just looks weird.

The interactive medium offers a whole range of different story telling methods. Having cut scenes in which your main character has to speak in order to advance the plot is archane in my opinion. A game like Metal Gear Solid has good gameplay for what gameplay there is, but whenever I play an MGS title I can't help think I'm watching a movie with short interactive bits inbetween.

If your character talked in a FPS, it would not be FP (First Person), as someone else is speaking - not you. Therefore, you do not feel like you are the main character. That's how I feel anyway, although the cutscenes (where it switches to a 3rd person viewpoint) may be a bit different.

I ussually don't feel "immersed" or anything at all in games... I never feel like the main character, might as well make him talk. More interesting that way.

but then again, 1st person novels don't leave blanks inbetween quote marks so you can write in what your characters going to say

Trembling with fear, I abruptly said "......................................................"

Depending on the type of genre played.
It works in Max Payne, it dosnt work in Half Life

I wasn't referring to books, I was talking about FPS (First Person Shooters) :dozey:

I would love for the character to actually converse. But then you have to think about it, do you want really cheesey voice covers, or would you rather sit there and think of something to say if you could? Either way, there are no good developers with a sense of humor. The games that come out that have you chatting it up are complete nonsense. Their scripts are pure shit. They add in terrible puns, and those little puns make me lose more and more respect for those games.

I would like the option of choosing discussions for FPS games, for example using the KP buttons to choose option 1, 2, 3, etc. Your character doesn't have to talk, just make it look like you've actually got some say in all of this epicness.

For example for HL2, when you reach Klieners lab

Option 1: What is happening here?

Reply 1: An occupation by some sort of extra dimensional force, I don't know exactly what happened, but I believe Eli has old newspaper snippets in his lab if you have time to look at it

Option 2:

Reply 2:

etc.....

You've been playing bad games then.

I sort of feel that way too becuase sometimes i am yelling out when i take damage in a FPS like i see myself getting ready to get shot and im like "WOAA NOOOOO and i strafe and go "BOOM!! HEADSHOT" MOTHER****ER YOU CAN'T **** WITH THIS! and then i realize im yelling and sometimes i yell like "OHHH SHITTT !!! UHHH ' im dead like as I see myself headed straight for a tree at 200 MPH in a race car... so yea! particularly FPS games are pretty immersive! :)

but my character is also making sounds of pain when he takes damage so is that "taking you out of the immersion too"? sometimes, and other times it makes it so much better. depends
