the lack of good parenting (a father in this case) may lead to psychological problems in children.

no shit...who the **** pays for these studies??

it's almost as bad as the iraqi death of relatives, and muscles are more attractive than a fat pig belly. damn

Things like "What makes a woman's bottom attractive?" and "What makes the best cup of tea?" and the like are typically funded by private companies who want to use it in a press release, and the researchers are often told "This is how we want it to pan out", which is kinda poor science. Chances are, the muscles one was funded by a company that deals with fitness products.

As for studies like the one you've mentioned, the point of them isn't really to find something new, but to have actual proof and numbers. Ever say something thought to be common knowledge, and someone says "prove it?" Studies like that one allow you to have proof.

It also gives the oppertunity to quantify it. Sure, we know lack of parenting produces misbehaving kids, and smoking causes cancer, but with studies, we can figure out quite how bad the damage is.

Money spent on what you'd think of as frivolous research is still way better spent than money spent on dropping bombs on people's heads.
